Bernt (Benjamin) Martin Pederson Brekne
RobertaI am looking for the ancestors of my great-grandfather Benjamin Pederson. He was born on 6/7/1851. According to his death certificate, his father was Peter Jacobson. They lived on the Brekne (Braekne) farm in the Lista, Vest-Agder area of Norway and my grandmother's writings say that Benjamin was born there, but no records have been found that either of them were born there. Benjamin emigrated to the United States in 1871. A Peter Jacobson on the Torp farm in Lista/Vanse is a possibility, but is not verified. Does anyone have any leads for me? Thanks,
BriningHi there is a Gesine Gabrielsd in the 1865 census living on the Brækne farm. Click Here Could that be where the connection to the Brekne farm came from?? If your Benjamin and Gesine lived in St Louis County Minnesota in the 1900 censu they had 7 children 6 living. Have you checked with the County Historical Society? Sometimes they have written histories on people Carla
RobertaI have just about everything that can be found about Gesine - A Norwegian Historical Society sent me 100 pages of ancestors and I have a copy of the census you referenced. It is Benjamin's ancestors I'm looking for. I have the descendants in the United States pretty well under control - just a few censuses that are missing for children. My grandmother put together a history and lineage before she died so I had a lot to work with on the US side. It's Norway and Benjamin (or Barendt or Bernt) Pederson that we can't find any traces of farther back that what I have already stated.
HopkinsThere is one Bernt Jakobsen of the appropriate age in Lista, Vest-Agder at the time of the 1865 census. He is living with his mother and step-father also with several siblings - http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1865&knr=1041&kenr=015&bnr=0003&lnr=000 If I were you I'd carefully study the parish birth/baptismal records for Lista. That would indicate the parentage of boys born in that time period.
RobertaNope, that one doesn't look right. I'm looking for Bernt Pederson, son of Peder Jacobson (per his death certificate). The Flekkefjord Historielage of the Vest-Agder area could find no record of him being born in Brekne or the Vest-Agder area in their database of all the censuses, bygdeboks, etc. They believe he and his dad moved into that area from another area even though my family sources seemed to think he was born in Brekne. I am looking for a contact that may have the right information in another area, or something the historical society has overlooked. The only record they had found was his date of emigration, his marriage to my great-grandmother (Gesine Gabrielsdtr) who emigrated to Ishpeming, MI to marry him and that they had had one child. The only Peder Jakobsen they suspect may have been his father would have fathered him at the age of 65 as he was born in 1786 to Jakob Pedersen Meberg 1752 - 1834, who was m. in 1782 to Grete Marie Ottesdtr Torp 1756-1824 datter of Otte Nilsen 1728-1790 and Valborg Salvesdtr Torp 1724-1804.
