1882 departure Stavanger
mermaidtears	Need help in finding the ship/passenger list in which my great, great grandparents emigrated from Stavanger. Halvor Halvorsen born 1840 Abigael Andersdtr born: 1842 they were living on farm Vestbø in Finnøy, Rogaland at time of departure. They left Norway with seven children (I know who the children are)....they show up on digitalarkivet emigration database, but it is probably a reconstructed entry due to records (most anyway) being destroyed for Stavanger...can find no refrence to ship they sailed on, where they went to, or where they landed on this side of atlantic. I assume they maybe went to England or somewhere and boarded a larger vessel for the atlantic crossing, but have had no luck at all in finding the family on a ship. Later census records and the information available from Norway, do indicate the year 1882. Any assistance is greatly appreciated. Stacey
Jo Anne Sadler	The emigrant database usually indicates the shipping line and sometimes the agent. Taking that information and using the databases on this site, you can research the shipping line and agents and what routes they operated in 1882. That can give you clues to where they landed in the U.S. (or Canada).
Hopkins	Where did they settle after they emigrated? Travelling with 7 children they should have been noticed by someone....
mermaidtears	Hello Hopkins: They settled in Le Grand township, Marshall Co. Iowa....my documentation for once the family is here, is pretty good. I have documentation of them in Norway too...problem is finding the ship, and where they came in at. Finnøy bygdebøker indicates that they were "given" 300 crowns to assist with the trip....that's about all I know of their voyage at this point. Thanks for your reply. Stacey
Hopkins	LeGrande township, right on the border with Tama County and with the Iowa River flowing through? It's rather pretty through there. I had ancestors who sailed/steamed from Norway and settled just a county or two away in central Iowa about that same time period. I finally found that they arrived at the port of Quebec and travelled by various other modes of land transportation from that point. That might be where to search for passenger lists of arrivals. Is it your Halver Halvorson in Le Grande township, Marshall Co., IA in 1900, a stone mason, widower and lives with daughter named Clara?
mermaidtears	Hi Hopkins: Yes, That's my emigrant "father"...Halvor. His wife died in 1896, so the only one left in the house is the youngest daughter. And yes on your description to the "where" in Iowa. And yes, it IS very beautiful there...I was born in Iowa, and have visited/decorated the graves in Le Grand many times...are your relatives from Hardin county perchance? I have run in to alot of other Norwegians who seemed to settle in that area too during my research. How would I go about finding the arrivals in Canada? mermaidtears	Thanks MAS...I don't read Norwegian (As you know :D ) Did I miss something when I looked at this record? Is there mention of any type of vessel? I'm thinking they might have left Stavanger and headed towards another port to board a larger ship...but still have had no luck in locating that ship which brings the family to America...
