Census translation
scotsprncsI am having trouble finding the translation for this word on the census, Fattigkassen. It is by a woman's name for occupation. Thank you!
BorgeA person listed as "fattigkassen" in the occupation field was a pauper recipient
scotsprncsWould they have listed her that way if she was living with her daughter? She was 75 years old.
BorgeYes, they would do that. It might be the case if the economy of the daughter's family was not strong enough to support pauper family members living in with them. The family would then receive support from the parish for the number of paupers living at their home. It was a system called "lęgd" where a pauper would be quartered at a farm with the support by the parish. There are some grim examples through the history, of places where the number of paupers became a problem, and the parish officials decided to buy tickets for the paupers to be sent to America.
