Vang, Ringsaker, Furnes and "Fripas"
furstsOn some info it says that GGGpa Mathias Solberg was from Vang Parish and others say Ringsaker Parish. The two sons worked in Furnes as weavers. Where are these locations compared to the Solberg farm? My ancestor had "Fripas" noted with his emigration info. Why would he have a "free ticket?" Thanks for your help! [:)]
Borge"Fripas" just relates to the military, it means he was relieved from the scrolls, free to leave the country
NancyCSolberg is a fairly common name, but I am reasonably certain that your folks must have come from Furnes. Furnes Parish used to be a part of Vang Parish, and the church records covered both parishes. Here is a link to a map showing the location of Solberg Farm in Furnes, between Hamar and Brumunddal. http://search.kvasir.no/query?what=amap&mapcomp=%3B&streetname=Solberg&streetnumber=&city=Furnes
furstsNancy, Thank you so very much for that link. Yes, they were from the Furnes area. I tried to put in my other GGGrandfather's farm name but I must not have it correct. He and his family had the following farm names listed in various papers: Vold, Hvalstad, and Hjelmstad. GGGrandpa's name was Hans Jorgensen Hjelstad. He was born to Jorgen Johannesson and Kiersti Hansdatter. The info states they lived in the Ringsaker Dist., also. I would love to know if these two families knew each other or lived near each other. Thanks again. I have made so much progress!
NancyCGlad to hear you think this is the right farm. I think what is confusing is the fact that Ringsaker County today consists of a number of former counties, including Furnes (but not Vang, which is a part of Hamar now). Old Ringsaker County is the area north of Brumunddal, along Lake Mjøsa. If you are interested in the geography, you can see old Ringsaker County if you click on the northwest arrow on the map in the link. It lies between Brumunddal and Moelv, and you can zoom in the area on the map. Your ancestors were probably christened, married and buried at Furnes Church, which is a lovely old stone church not too far from the Solberg Farm. Here is a link to a picture of it. http://images.google.no/images?q=%22Furnes%20kirke%22&hl=no&lr=&sa=N&tab=wi
furstsI found the christening of my GGGrandpa Solberg on the LDS website. It said Furnes. My other GGGrandpa - Jorgensen Hjelmstad's info says they married in the Ringsaker Church. GGGrandma came from the Kolstad farm. They were both listed as unmarried servants. Where is the Ringsaker Church located? (I am so excited to find out all this info!) Thanks!
NancyCRingsaker Church is located just south of Moelv on a hillside overlooking Lake Mjøsa. It is one of the most beautiful churches in Norway and has wonderful artwork. It is frequently used for concerts, and the organist there is a wonderful musician. Here are some pictures. If you click on the links you can see some interiors and the floor plan of the church. http://home.no.net/rhnorton/ringsaker01.htm
