S/S UMBRIA to New York. Can I find the feeder ship and route somehow? The UMBRIA passenger list indicates her point of departure from Sweden was Bergen, Sweden ? A mistake, but is it possible she went via Bergen, Norway?Larry[:)]">
Copenhagen - Bergen - Hull ? Feeder Route
halve_lmMy ggm emigrated from southern Sweden via Denmark. I found a "Forevisnings date" of 12 Nov 1885 in the Danish emigration database. From the passenger lists, I just found out that she departed Liverpool on 21 November 1885 on the S/S UMBRIA to New York. Can I find the feeder ship and route somehow? The UMBRIA passenger list indicates her point of departure from Sweden was Bergen, Sweden ? A mistake, but is it possible she went via Bergen, Norway? Larry[:)]
Jo Anne SadlerBelieve they mean Bergen, Norway.[:)] Recommend you go into the index on this site, Arrivals for November 1885, click on Umbria for ship information and then click on Cunard Line and you will get alot of information and pictures. This doesn't answer your question but will give you some information on the ship and shipping line.
halve_lmThanks Jo-Ann - I took a look at some of the Wilson Line info. They ran feeders from Copenhagen and from Bergen. If you were in Copenhagen from southern Sweden why would'nt you take a ship that goes directly to Hull? I don't see any indication that Copenhagen -Bergen - Hull was a normal route for any of these steamers. Looks like you would have to change ships at Bergen. I did download some of the pictures - they are great. Larry[8D]
BorgeFrom working with emigration history my impression is that the emigrants wanted to travel as fast and inexpensive as possible. Going from Sweden to Copenhagen and from there to Bergen in Norway makes no sense. If someone did that, they must have had a very specific reason for taking the trip to Bergen before going to England, as it would add extra expenses and prolong the voyage with 4-5 days.
Jo Anne SadlerWhat was her name? I have viewed the passenger list manifest for this voyage and the Umbria that arrived at the Port of New York on 11-30-1885 has five Danes listed, only one female: Julia Clementson, age 18 from Denmark - Rotchen(?) hard to read. No mention of Bergen there.
halve_lmJo-Anne/Borge, Her name was Hilda Bergvall (age 26). She was traveling with younger sister Eva (16). Hilda married a Norwegian, a ship's steward, who possibly was a crew member on UMBRIA on that voyage. Perhaps that had something to do with the stop in Bergen. He wasn't from Bergen however -- he was from Arendal, Aust Agder and had been working out of England for about 10 years. Thanks, Larry
Jo Anne SadlerPer your original posting: "The UMBRIA passenger list indicates her point of departure from Sweden was Bergen, Sweden ?" This is not what the passenger list said[:)]. Hilda and Eva are listed as Citizens of Sweden and their Native Country being Bergen (Norway). You will note that the other passengers had many different countries listed as citizens and native country of origin. I believe one can intrepret the meaning of Native Country to be their current residence. They are not listed in the Digitalarkivet 1874-1930 Emigrants from Bergen. Since they are in the Danish database they must have taken a Wilson Line feeder ship from Copenhagen to Hull. What they were doing in Copenhagen is anyone's guess.
Jo Anne SadlerIn the CD, The Swedish Emigrant No. 1/2001 both Hilda and Eva are indicated as leaving Sweden in 1885 for New York, so? Only the year is indicated, no county of origin. They traveled late in the year and traveling down to Copenhagen may have been an easier/cheaper way to get to Liverpool. The Bergen on the list may just be an error.[:0]
halve_lmThanks all, They were in the Gramanstorp parish HFL as leaving for America in 85. It makes no sense they were living in Bergen, Norway. I have to agree it must be a mistake. Maybe they got on the wrong ship in Copenhagen! Jo-Anne -Thanks for setting me straight on what Sweden and Bergen, meant on the passenger list. v/r Larry
