need help translating Norwegian to English
skbristol	I'm trying to translate some info from a bygdebøk and would appreciate some help. Jon Halvardson var innanfrå landet... Jon kjøpte Lauvås i 1786 og odels- og åsætesretten m.m. i 1787. I'm not sure what the first part means. Does the second part say that he purchased the farm in 1786 and received the authority to pass it to his son in 1787? This next passage is about Erik's affairs with two women, but I can't figure out all the details. Thanks so much for your help. [:I] I 1756 vart Erik og Aagota stemnde for legermålet. Ingen møtte. Ingen av dei var konfirmerte. Dei vart stemnde att til hausttinget same året, men då var Erik utskriven til militærteneste i København der han var i 6 år. Aagota bøtte 6 rdl. og vart dømd til eit halvt års straffarbeid i Bergens Manufakturhus, truleg fordi ho ikkje var konfirmert. Erik og Helvig vart stemnde i 1785. Erik vart dømd til å sitja 8 dagar på vatn og brød og sjølv betala opphaldet. Vidare skulle han betale doble legermålsbøter, 48 lodd sølv, og bøta alt han åtte. “... samt derefter paa fiire aar begive paa fiskerleierne i Nordlandene, dog ci i same eller næste prestegjeld hvor Helvig Samsonsdtr. komuner at opholde sig." Erik døydde der nord i 1786. Helvig fekk same straff, men berre 24 lodd sølv i bot.

Borge	These couples were accused of fornication. In 1756 Erik escaped punishment by taking service in the army, and served 6 years at Copenhagen. Aagota had to pay 6 Riksdaler (a lot of money at the time) and had to go for convict labor at the Bergen Manifakturhouse, a convict establishment, probably a place where they worked with sewing of textiles. The sentence was probably harder because she was not confirmed. In 1785 Erik served 8 days on bread an water. He had to pay the double of ordinary fornication fine, 48 pieces of silver, and lost all what he owned. In addition he had to serve as a convict laborer at the fishing stations in the Nordland area. However never to stay in the same or neighboring parish where Helvig was staying. Erik died during his stay in Nordland in 1786. Hedvig was given the same punishment but was only fined 24 pieces of silver.

jwiborg	åseterett = qualified allodial right of inheritance odelsrett = allodial law, allodial privilege legermål, leiermål = sexual intercourse between an unmarried couple ( or for instance a married man and a servant) . Could result in an illegitimate child ... [:)]
skbristol	Thanks for the clarification, jwiborg. I've found other relatives in Norway who also had illegitimate children and from what I've read, it wasn't uncommon and wasn't necessarily frowned upon. It seems like Erik and Aagota and Helvig were pretty severly punished, though. Does anybody know why? Were some parts of the country more accepting of these behaviors?
Borge	I think they were punished pretty much in accordance with the contemporary practice. However, when being charged for the same offense several times the punishment would be harder for each time, and if you had not been a humble member of the church it could be that they wanted to statue an example.
