Gjoines/Joines
BettyMI am looking for Ole and Ingaborg Joines from Tinn, Telemark Norway. They came over to America c. 1900. They went to Wiscinsin where Ole had a brother Tov. If anyone know of this family or has any ideas where I might search being I don't speak Norwegian, I woud appreciate the help.
HopkinsThe Telelag has a website with a guestbook where you could also post a query. I know there is at least one active member at that site who seems to have a great deal of information about Tinn. It would be an excellent idea if you added some information such as when Ole and Ingeborg were each born and if they were married before or after emigration. http://www.telelaget.com/ Many of the websites with data from Norwegian censuses, etc. contain Norwegian language and limited English. But you will also find a number of word lists online which can help translate the typical genealogy important terms. Here's a good website to start with - http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/articles.html
HopkinsOn a farm called Jøines in Tinn, Telemark at the time of the 1900 census there are two brothers, Ole and Tov Johnsen. They also have a sister named Ingeborg. http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=f00826&gardpostnr=292&sokefelt=skjul A database of emigrants from Tinn lists two Tovs from the farm Jøines who left for North America. http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=em08261837&gardpostnr=1572&sokefelt=skjul http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=em08261837&gardpostnr=1818&sokefelt=skjul But without knowing the ages of persons and possibly better estimates of when they left Norway I think I'm wasting my time...
DALBThe John Tovsson family that Hopkins noted on the 1900 census is the older brother of your Ole Jøynes. They are among at least 7 siblings, 5 of whom moved to America. Brother Sondre also married and remained in Norway, at least at the time the Bygdebok was written. And most, or all of their first cousins, from their father’s brother Jon Jonsson, also came to America. I believe your family is child # 7 of the children born to Tov Jonsson and wife Anne Tinn Soga II Atrå sogn Baklien med Jøynes og Jorde page 433 Page 437 Jøynes (is a place under Baklien) *Tov Nilsson d. 1844 1st marr. to *Liv Jonsdatter d. 1833 3 children: *Jon Tovsson, Ole Tovsson and Kjersti (b. 1811) *Jon Tovsson marr. * Anne Jonsdatter 2 sons: *Tov Jonsson b. 1837 (also known as Tov Jørgen Jonsson from Solum) and Jon Jonsson b. 1833 (marr. twice. - 8 children – many to America) (both are on same farm in 1865) *Tov Jonsson b. 1837 marr. in 1852 to *Anne Sondresdatter (Sondre Kjetilsson Kåse) 7 children: 1. BettyMPlease forgive me for not replying to your all for your help with the Joines family. We have had severe rain and flooding here in Southern Alberta, Canada for the last month and it has not left me a great deal of time to check out my genealogy. I appreciate all your help and when I get check the links and connections out I will get back to you. Thank You again for the information. Regards Betty [:D]
