Hans Johansen Johnson ( Lystne) Gunhild Pederson
RobertaHans Johansen Johnson upon arriving in America changed the name to Hans J. Lystne. Hans J. Lystne and his wife, Gunhild, (Pederson) were both born in Nordreland, Norway. Gunhild in August of 1848 and Hans in April of 1852. They were married in 1875 and immigrated to America (MN) in 1883. Hans, 31, and oldest son, John, 9, left Oslo, Norway on prepaid tickets for New York in June, 1883. Gunhild, 35, Berte Maria, 5, Hans. Jr., 4, Olaf, 1, left September 14, 1883, on prepaid tickets for New York. Olaf, age 1, died on the ship coming over and was buried at sea. I am looking for any information on their whereabouts in Norway. Searches of Norwegian cenuses have not proved conclusive and they do not show up in the LDS records. Does anyone have any information on this family in Norway?
jwiborgHi, the Land parish in Oppland was split into two in 1866, Nordre (northern) and Søndre (southern) Land. So in census 1865, you should find them in Land, Oppland. There, the only "Gunhild Pedersdatter" which fits with born 1848, is a servant on the farm "Dæhlen": click here Hans was a bit worse. First of all, Lystne is a farm name, and there are one farm called "Lystne" and one called "Lysne" (could be misspelling) in the census for Land. However, there's noone which fits with your Hans on those farms in 1865. Maybe his parents are there, and that Hans is working on a nearby farm, and thus listed there. Or they could have moved. There are 6 boys age 13-14 named Hans in the census for Land, with a lastname of Johannesen. One of them could be your Hans... Jan Peter [:)]
jwiborgBy the way, churchrecords for Nordre Land, Oppland (1846-1859) can be found on Familysearch.org Batch Number: C424981 Source Dates: 1846 - 1859 Film or Fiche Number: 307307 Collection Details: Nordre Land; Den Norske Kirke Here is Gunnild Marthea Pedersdatter Gunnild Marthea Pedersdatter, Birth: 15 Aug 1848, Christening: 03 Sep 1848, Place: Nordre Land, Oppland, Norway Parents: Peder Gulbrandsen & Berthe Madsdatter Here they are on the farm "Bakken" in the 1865-census: click here Listed on the same farm are 4 of their sons (Martin, Hans Andreas, Kristian and Lauritz), 2 daughters (Berte M and Helene), and what appears to be Berte M. Madsdatter's (age 44) parents. Mads Nielsen must be Berte's father, though is says "his Father" in the status coloumn. Marit Halvorsdatter are his wife. The farm "Bakken" was their farm before Peder Gudbrandsen took over. Jan Peter [:)]
jwiborgHi again, Do a parent search at Familysearch.org, and you'll find most of the sons & daughters of Peder Gulbrandsen & Berthe Madsdatter. Fill in only Father - Last Name and Mother - Last name, and do a search. Scroll down to International Genealogical Index and Vital Records Index, and you'll find them. You'll see that Gunhild was a twin. Her twin sister died at birth, 15 Aug 1848. RobertaThank you very much for all your help. I had been looking at all the records until my eyes were crossing. The clue I was missing was where to look for them in Norway - the information on Nordre Land being in Oppland. I had tried to Google it without much success. Now it all makes sense! I also had never tried to put just parents names in the LDS search engine and see what it came up with (of course you need to know the parental names first!). I love this forum, I've had a lot of luck here in getting good help! Thanks again.
