Passage from Norway to Canada |
cockatiel | Need some more information on my grandmother Anna Ruud(nee Wamnes)
I only have limited information on this topic, so don't know how much I can find here.
I know she arrived in the US in June of 1902. I believe she left from Kristiania and she arrived in Canada, but we don't know what port she came into. Hope this helps.
Regards,

jwiborg | Looks like it was 1903...
Anna Vamnes, 18 yrs, from Kristiania, left Kristiania/Oslo on May 22nd, 1903. Destination was Chicago: click here
The ship was "S/S Angelo"

According to this page, S/S Angelo's route was Kristiania - Kristiansand and then crossing the North sea to Hull, England. Then she would have crossed England by train to (most likely) Liverpool, where she boarded the ship which brought her across the Atlantic.

cockatiel | Hi Jan,
Thanks again for all your great help in finding information for me on my grandmother.
I know my mother seems to think my grandmother had mentioned Canada when coming to the states, but then there could have been a misunderstanding of facts between the two of them.
From looking at the Archives sheet, it sure seems to appear to be her. My mother said she thought she was travelling with a cousin when she went across, but my Mom and I don't even know that person's name.
Now, all I have to do is find the ship she would have taken from Liverpool to the states.
My mother has the opposite information on her father. We have the manifest on the ship he came across from Liverpool to New York, but we don't know the ship he left on from Norway to Hull.
He left Liverpool in Sept 2, 1904 on the "Cedric" and arrived in New York on Sept 12, 1904. We believe he would have left Oslo also sometime in 1904 to connect with the ship he left from in Liverpool.
Thank You again very much for all your help.

jwiborg | ....and without being too clairvoyant ... what was her husbands' name? Oscar Ruud? [8D]
If you look at the date of emigration for Anna (May 22nd, 1903), you'll see that there is 3 girls listed on the same page of her, which could mean that they signed in or bought the ticket at the same time.
They're all from Oslo, and their destination reads Chicago..., same as Anna.. [;)]
I would assume one of them would be her cousin.
Sofie Andresen, 24 yrs
Josefine Skesvig, 15 yrs
Halvaida Eriksen, 24 yrs

jwiborg | I belive Josefine could be her cousin!
Josefine Skredsvig is a foster child to Anton O. Wamnæs b. 1848 in Skibtvet in census 1900 for Kristiania/Oslo! [:)] click here
As you've seen before, Anton Wamnæs is a widower, and is taking care of his 3 daughters Karen, Bertha and Inga, plus the two foster childs Karoline Skredsvig b.1885 and Josefine Skredsvig b.1887.

jwiborg | Ok,
for the record:
Anna's husband's name was Thorwald Ruud.
Here he is emigrating from Oslo on Friday 26th of August, 1904, together with his brother(?) Hugo Martinius Andersen Rud (22). Destination reads Wisconsin, and the ship was S/S Montebello, which according to this page sailed Kristiania - Kristiansand - Hull.
