Malmanger family
cdahlI am now researching information for my husband's family. Their name is Malmanger from Kvindherred, Hordaland, Norway. I cannot find the ship that Erik came on in 1901; also Johan in 1881 (I think). We have info that Johan was adopted by an Omvik family. We question if he came to America with the family and because he was only 10, for legal reasons they had guardianship of him? Is there a web site that I can locate information about the family in Norway? Thanks for your help. Carol
HopkinsErik Toresen (that might be called something like Thorson in America? -- you didn't specifiy) born in 1879 was the son of Tore Larsson and his wife Brita. Tore died in 1907 but his wife died in 1895. Erik leaving Norway from Bergen in 1901 - http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=0114EMIG&gardpostnr=856&sokefelt=skjul Was 'Johan' his brother? born about 8 or 9 years before Erik? Yes, Johan and older brother Samson Toresen/Thorsen left from Bergen in 1881 - Three brothers (only three of the eight siblings). http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=0114EMIG&gardpostnr=144&sokefelt=skjul You might find the family mentioned in various websites - but the best way to follow the family history accurately would be to use the parish records for Kvinnherad and/or the bygdeboker that were published about the history/genealogy of the district. Kvinnherad is also well represented in the databases online through the Digitarlkiarvet. P.S. Omvik is another Kvinnerad farm name.

Jo Anne SadlerUsing the link Hopkins provided, Erik left Bergen around April 1, 1901, contracting with the Cunard Line. There is much information about Cunard on this site. They did not operate a direct Norway to North America route but left from Liverpool to Boston or New York. On the Ellis Island database: Erik Torjasen, from Christrd., age 20, arrived New York Harbor April 25, 1901 on the Teutonic from Liverpool. The Teutonic was operated by the White Star Line, not the Cunard[?].
Jo Anne SadlerThere are 12 Malmanger's in the 1900 census: click here
cdahlThank you for the information. I will be attending the Vestlandet Stevne held in Sioux Falls this week-end. Hopefully I will be able to research in the bygdeboker for the Kvindherred area. I know that there is a mountain at Rosendal named Malmanger Mountain. Is that where the Malmanger's orginated? Also, were the Omvigs neighbors of the Malmangers. Hopefully I will be able to locate a map of the area in the late 1880's. Carol
HopkinsOmvik and Malmanger farms are probably about 4 to 5 kilometers apart (estimated from a flat map). If you can look in the Kvinnherad bygdeboker - pick up book 3 of that series first. The Malmanger farm history starts on page 281 and the family is listed on page 290. They might have chosen to use the name Malmanger because that was the last place they had lived in Norway. Erik and Johan's father, Tore has family history tracing back to about 1645 on the Stuland farm (also in Kvinnherad and listed in book 3).
