1869 Maryland Crossing- Articles- John Headland
jheadlandIn the "Articles" part of this web site, I found that the log my Great Grandfather had kept during the voyage 1869 had been provided. What I am having a difficult time with is the passenger list, in Norwegian of course. I am pretty sure that the passenger Johannes Helland and wife are my Great Grand Parents- but the names are not what our "English" name became (Headland). They were also travelling the family of my Great Grandmother, her parents and unmarried sisters, but I cannot locate her maiden name at this time. Is there any way to confirm the passengers and names listed? Also, how do I obtain information on them prior to leaving Norway? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Jo Anne SadlerYou can rent the passenger list microfilm at a local Family History Center. The list is not in Norwegian, only the names are in Norwegian. Recommend you read the article on this site, Those Norwegian Names. Women did not have "maiden" names in those days. Helland was a farm name, an address. Finding them in the 1865 census would help but you need more information. Parents names, siblilngs names to verify the correctness. You say they were traveling with the family of your great grandmother, what were their names? Once you find them in the 1865 census, you can rent the microfilm church records.
BorgeHere is a scan of the names as they are listed:
jwiborgHi, by looking at the people listed before and after the Helland's, I would suggest you start looking in the following two areas:
 • Leikanger, Sogn & Fjordane
 • Voss, Hordaland
 • Endre Eriksen are from the farm Øvre - Njøs in Lekanger parish, Sogn & Fjordane.
 • The Borloug family are from the farm Borlaug yttre in Lekanger parish, Sogn & Fjordane.
 • The Boe family are from the farm Bø in Voss, Hordaland.
There are Helland and Hellandshaug farms in Voss, Hordaland. In Lekanger, Sogn & Fjordane, you'll find the farms Halland and Helleland. I would guess you'll find Johannes parent's on one of those farms... [:)] Johannes is not there. He might be working as a servant nearby. There are 5 possibilities of Ranvei in Voss, maybe 1 in Lekanger. Jan Peter
jheadlandThank you for your responses! I have some more information; Johannes (John) and Ranvei (Solveig) were travelling with Ranvei's family- Palmer. They first settled in Rice County, Minnesota and 1871 removed to Cass County, North Dakota- Stanley township. Resided on a farm until 1907, had 6 children, retired 1907 moved to Fargo. One of their children, Emil J., b. 6/22/1876,( grandfather) took over the farm. In 1910 Emil J., married Oline Dahl, born in Minnesota (1/17/1877) daughter of Ole and Rebecca Dahl. They had 6 children, Mildred, Solveig, Emil(my father), Elna, Dagney and Borghild(Borgie). Any record of the Palmer family on this ships passenger list? Thank you again!
BriningHi Here is a very good candidate for Solveig in the 1865 census Click Here Elland Palmes. could very easily become Elland Palmer. Connecting Ranvei and Solvei is difficult. The names and ages are different. The 1900 census has John born July 1837 and Solvei born May 1850. They have been married 31 years and came to the US in 1869. Could Ranvei have died and John remarried?? In the 1910 census John E.and Solvei are living on the farm with Emil. The emigration year is listed as 1871?? Carla
BriningHi Based on the initial E. in the 1910 census in John's name (a lot of times this indicated their patronym), here is a good canidate for him on the Helleland farm in the 1865 census. Johannes Endresen Click Here Carla
jwiborgHi, I've also seen this Johannes Endresen @ the Helleland farm in Lekanger parish, census 1865. But I can't get his age to fit in. It' says he is 29 years old, meaning born ca 1837. The Maryland passenger list from 1869 list Johannes Helland's age to 25, indicating born ca 1844. US-census for Cass county, Dakota, 1880, list John Hedland's age to 41, ie. born ca 1839. What's his age in 1910? The Maryland records seems to be way off, but it sure reads "25" behind his name, on the original scan! [B)] Jan Peter
BriningIn the 1910 census John is 72 which fits. I think we have the correct John Helleland in the Norwegian census but I think the passenger list is for a different John. In the 1870 census there is HELLAND JOHN 27 M W NORW MN WRIGHT COKATO I can't figure out his wife's name but she is 26. These two would fit in with the passenger list. Carla
