Eli Johannesdattter/Jespersen
colinswensonEli Jesperson was born in Norway on 3 Nov 1856. She immigrated to New Zealand and married Jons Svennson (John Swenson). They are my Great Grandmother and Great Grandfather. Eli was born on the farm Tormoen under Lundeby, Grue Parish,Solor. We are leaving New Zealand on the 18 July and will be in Norway from the 30 July to the 3 August. Staying at the Rainbow Terminus Hotel. I believe the area she came from is called Skarnes and is not far from Oslo. Any help with finding the farm Tormeon under Lunderby and Grue Parish by train would be appreciated.
jwiborgHi. which place are you trying to locate? Tørrmoen? The farm Tørrmoen is in Grue muncipality, Hedmark. It's close to the "yellow dot" left of where it says "GRUE" on the Hedmark map below. The yellow dot is Grue township. The train follows the black line close to the farm. You'll have the farm on the right side when you travel northwards, before you reach the Grue station. I'm not sure if you'll see the farm from the train, it's 3km east of the track. By train from Oslo: Your hotel is just 1 min walk from the Sentral Train Station... [:)] Take the railway line "Kongsvingerbanen" to Kongsvinger, and continue on the "Solørbanen" to Grue. Or you could continue to the Olympic city of Hamar (Lillehammer 1994)... Skarnes township is in Sør-Odal muncipality, Hedmark county. It's 20km west of Kongsvinger, and also marked with an yellow dot on the map below, just above where it says "SØR-ODAL". You'll pass it when you take the "Kongsvingerbanen" from Oslo to Kongsvinger... [:)]Oslo is the major yellow area down to the left on the map, where you see the Oslo-fjord comes in. colinswensonHi jwiborg Thanks for the info and directions. Eli Johannessen/Jespersen and family including father Johannes Jespersen, mother Maren Pedesdatter Turver sister Agnette Johannesdatter and others shifted from Grue Parish to Osviken Oppstad Parish in Sor-odal. Do you know if we can take the train to Oppstad. Also not sure if any distant relations still alive in the area. Eli's sister Agnette Johnannesdatter stayed in Norway, married Soren Hansen. Died on the 19/05/1927 on the farm Viken. Names I have is Johan Viken and wife Anna. Hestebraten home of Marget Viken. Tupperud the farm where a great aunt Astrid and distant cousin Arne lived. Any help is appreciated.
jwiborgHi, Oppstad is straight north of Skarnes, just before you get to the lake "Storsjøen". (Ref. map) As you see from the map, the black rail track goes south-east again (towards Kongsvinger), after Skarnes, so you'll have to stop in Skarnes to get there. Sounds like a rental car would be easier for this trip... [:)] Just remember to go on the right side of the road... [;)] Jan Peter .
BriningYou should get The Veiatlas Norge from Statens Kartverk of Norway. It has great maps of the areas and was very helpful when I was in Norway. Here is one source Click Here Also if you haven't found it already, here is a helpful link on Norway train travel Click Here Carla
colinswensonThanks Jan Peter and Carla. Peter bit reluctant to hire a car because I will have to drive on the other side of the road to which I am used to. I won't know exactly which way to go and I could have difficulty reading road signs if they are not in English. Would prefer to use public transport if possible. Maybe we can get a taxi or bus from Konsinger? Carla thanks for your suggestion. We have bought a map of Norway. A big fold out one. However as out time is limited probably not worth spending more money on maps. We travel on a Scanrail pass. Arrive in Copenhagen late Friday 22 July. Go across to Malmo Monday 25 July. Look around the area where my Great Grandfather came from, Trelleborg and Vastra Vemmerlov. Go up to Vangaharad to meet up with distant relations of my Great Grandfather. Over to Oslo Saturday 30 July. Oslo to Bergen Monday 1 August and back on the 2 August. Night ferry from Oslo to Frederickshavn on the 3/4 August then down to Sonderborg in Denmark before going over to the UK and doing a Trafalgar tour. In regards to your link for Norway Train Travel have found this link. But having a little difficulty with it. When I put in Grue as the destination station, I get a message that the station is not found. Maybe one needs to know the stations?
jwiborgHi, you'll reach Skarnes and Kongsvinger by train, but unfortunately not Grue anymore! [B)] The Solørbanen from Kongsvinger through Grue and ending up in Elverum was closed down for passenger traffic in 1994, due to very low traffic volume! Only goods are still transported on the track. The closed down Kirkenær station in Grue. The bus service in Norway are quite good, and there is a bus route from Kongsvinger and upwards to Grue, http://www.nettbuss.no. It leaves from Kongsvinger railway station and passes Grue rådhus (town hall). Timetable Return DX67 means Daily except sat and sun [:)] Taxi prices are quite high in Norway. 100 US dollars will maybe get you going for 30-45 minutes... Jan Peter
colinswensonHi Jan Peter Thanks for the info. Will see what we can do when we are in Oslo. Probably on the Sunday 31 July will take the train out to skarnes and kongsvinger if we can get out and back okay on the Sunday. Colin Swenson
