trying to find my family
printermanI am descendent of Hans (Kauserud) Hanson. Trying to located the lines from Kiptvet, Norway.
HopkinsYou must be looking for the parish/clerical district of Skiptvet in Østfold. That is south of Oslo. What dates do you have for Hans Hanson? When was he born? When did he leave Norway? Do you have names of any other family members born in Norway and those vital identifying dates? You mentioned on your profile page that the family was probably first in Minnesota. When did they leave the US? Several of us have some access to online US census information - we'd love to know if additional information might be able to be found somewhere in Minnesota. Any clues as to WHERE in Minnesota? Be sure and review the posting guidelines which you can read under the topic heading suggestions on the Forum page.
printermanfollowing up: Hans Kauserud (Hanson) originally from Kiptvet, Norway, emigrated to Thief Lake, Mn and he and his wife were buried around there...cemetary unknown there are a LOT of hansons in this part and north to Foam Lake Saskatchewan.
printermanHans was born 1831 in Norway, and died in Thief River Falls, Pennington County MN. ONly dates avaialble are when they died or born. How does one go back further than Hans. Perhaps...why Hanson..easier to pronounce?
HopkinsTo go further back than Hans you have to figure out WHERE in Norway he came from. Then you can look for records which record the names of his parents, etc. etc. Hans could still have been in Norway for the 1865 Norwegian census? The name Kauserud was probably adapted from the name of the farm where he or earlier family had residence. If you know of other family members who came to America of the same family (including at least approximate vital dates) you can greatly increase the chances that they can be located. There are farms called Kauserud in several parts of Norway but I can't see one in Skiptvet -- and I've never heard of area called 'Kiptvet'. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/articles.html

RobertaHave you tried to get a copy of their death certificates? Additional information on the parents' names may be there, though not necessarily. If that info is available, then you could confirm whether any of these people in the censuses are the correct ones. I was able to get a death log for 1885 in MN. Also check to see if there is a county historical society. In doing research for a family member from the Norman County area, I found that the local historians had a wealth of information including a picture of the family, newspaper articles of deaths, weddings, etc. From the information in them I was able to trace the family back to censuses in Norway. Thief Lake is Marshall County. try http://www.rootsweb.com/~mnmarsha/ Posting queries there and on Rootsweb's bulletin board, both on the general board and Østfold may also produce some results. If you are able to get parents' names, try http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp That is where I made the connection to Norway on my great-grandmother. Good luck!
RobertaWhich was it now, Thief River Falls or Thief Lake - you have listed both of them - one is in Pennington County and Thief Lake is in Marshall? There is a Hans Hanson in the 1900 census of Thief Lake born about 1833 in Norway. Wife's name looks like Guro and a son, Joseph. He emigrated 1852. Was a farmer and the son was born in WI. I found Hans Hansons that died in Thief River Falls (Pennington County) but they were born in 1891and 1875. A Hans Hanson died in Marshall County in 1915 (no other personal information listed). A Hans Peter Hanson died in Marshall County in 1916 also. That is about all that Ancestry.com is showing.
