Need help finding 1854 emigrants
JFJ	My great great grandfather, Hendrik Peterson, a policeman and jail warden in Kristiansand, emigrated with his wife Mary and his children, including my great grandfather, August Peterson in 1854. They first settled in WI, and in 1858, moved to Freeborn county MN. I recently found both men among the Norwegian Americans who fought in the civil war and, thus, am this far. Now I need help finding the ship on which they sailed to America.
JFJ	Thank you for your response. Assuming I have accurate data, I can assume, can I not, that my ancestors traveled on one of these two ships?
Trond	By carrying most of the emigrants from Arendal and Flekkefjord the Brig Victoria would be my guess number one. On the other hand the Bark Arendal should be mentioned to, but she had most of her passengers from Stavanger.
Trond	It will be difficult to find the right ship for Henrik and Mari in 1854. Passenger list for Quebec is missing this year. However, being from Kristiansand leaves only two possible ships departing this area of Norway for America. The Brig “Victoria” or Bark “Arendal”, both of them carrying passengers from Arendal and neighboring areas. The newspaper “Morgenbladet” writes May 4 1854: Arendal, April 28: During this week two ships “Victoria”, Capt. Møller and “Arendal”, Capt. Paulsen sailed for Quebeck with emigrants. On “Victoria” departed 70 adults and 27 children and on “Arendal” 28 adults and 5 children. Both ships called at the West coast, on Flekkefjord and Stavanger for more passengers. Later, on May 2 “Arendal” picked up some 189 passengers in Stavanger. [img]http://home.chello.no/~traust/MB18540504.jpg[/img]
