HopkinsWith father's name being Johan he should have been called Johansen (or similar spelling) in Norway. Ottestad is in Stange district of Hedmark, Norway. The family would appear to be living on a farm called Haugelie in Stange in the 1900 Norwegian census - http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=f00417&gardpostnr=310&sokefelt=skjul His mother's given name was Maren (Marion not being a Norwegian given name, but similar in sound.) Parish church records can be found on microfilm available from the LDS Family History network of centers scattered nearly everywhere. There is also a published bygdebok for the Stange area, "Stange bygdebok : gårds- og slektshistorien" by M. Veflingstad. This may be Hans Johansen leaving from Oslo in late January of 1904 - destination Wisconsin. http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=EMIOSLO&gardpostnr=154144&sokefelt=skjul You can learn about using Norwegian records - http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/articles.html
Jo Anne SadlerOn the free Ellis Island database for the Port of New York passenger manifests, here is the same Hans Johansen that was in the link that Hopkins provided: Hans Johansen, carpenter, 21, from Ottestad, leaving Christiania on January 28, 1904 on the Oscar II, arriving Port of New York on February 11, 1904. Traveling with Martin Johansen, 32, carpenter from Ottestad. They are both going to their cousin, Lars Nelson in Osseo, WI. There is information and several pictures on this site of the Oscar II.
Jo Anne SadlerThis organization should be able to help you. Their area covers the Stange kommune: http://www.nhohlag.org/
DALBSolørlag also covers the Hedmark area of Norway, including Stange. Their annual meeting (Stevne) will be held in Austin, Minnesota on September 14 - 17, 2005. Data is on their web site. They do have the Stange Bygdebok (farm history), parish films for all of Hedmark, and the transcripts of the films for Stange, Ottestad and Tangen, up to about 1879.
