Anna Gulette Olsen/Andreasdatter NOr-USA 1909
BertaHello! I have posted a topic concering this before http://www.norwayheritage.com/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1015 but as I now have one question, I decided that a new topic might be best. My question is: I have searched Ellis Island online for a long time, trying to find the "correct" Anna. But... I have not been lucky at all. Can anyone help me find her immigrated to the US? In the online-record at Digitalarkivet she is destined to travel to New York. http://www.digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=emikra1&gardpostnr=188580&merk=188580#ovre but as I said, I have not been able to find her at Ellis Island. Is there someone who might be more "professional" at finding people at Ellis Island? Her facts: Born: 30.11.1872 Married: 1896 to Julius Olsen Census 1900: http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=f00113&gardpostnr=436&personpostnr=3643&merk=3643#ovre Her birthname: Anna Gulette Andreasdatter (Solli). I have tried Ellis Island online, and "Searching Ellis Island in one step". But, maybe someone out there is more lucky than me? I have searched for her for a long time, and it would be great if I could find her! Sincerely Berta
einarhHi! My experience is that death certificates through a (minimum) subscription to Ancestry.com is a good solution. But for my research, good advise and also very valuable link introductions from efficient researchers on this site have reallly cracked the nuts! In my case I must say they have solved the whole problem! I think you have been in touch with one of them before. Best
BertaThank you for your answer. Yes, I have gotten a lot of help. Therefore I am a bit reluctant to ask for more. But this woman is keeping me busy. I just can't understand why I don't find her... One of the solutions that have been suggested, is that she might have travelled to Boston instead. And of course, this is a possibillity, but why does it say "New York" when she departs from Norway? I thought that you had to show tickets to the police, when you emigrated, and she might have been "playing card" in Hull, as shown in "Titanic". But I do not think this is very plausible.... It would be a fun story to tell though! It would be great to find her, since I have tried for so long. Appriciate all help. Berta
BertaI can not believe my luck! I have today found that Anna had two brothers who emigrated. The two were: Hans Andreassen Soli, born February 7th 1891. He emigrated on June 3rd 1910, and arrived at Ellis Island June 19th 1910 with the ship, St. Paul from Southampton. His Ellis Island listing is here: http://www.ellisisland.org/search/shipManifest.asp?MID=00120965920256229184&FNM=HANS&LNM=SOLLI&PLNM=SOLLI&CGD=M&bSYR=1889&bEYR=1893&first_kind=1&RF=3&pID=101373140055 my transcribtion: Nr. 25 Solli Hans 19 4-34305 2/9/43 Norway Scandinavian, Norway Sarpsborg Mother Grethe Solli Sarpsborg N Y New York yes Self ?? Sister Anna Ri?? 160 R?? Str. B?? New York, N Y ?? 5'9 Norway Sjęberg As you might see, he is going to his "sister Anna". But I can not read the adress and her last name, Can anyone help me with this? I guess she lives i New York City, has changed her last name. ( married?) If anyone could find her in the census also, I would be so happy! Berta
BriningHi Berta Anne's last name looks like Rissoth but I didn't find anything in the 1910 census. I believe I did find Hans in the 1920 census in Baltimore Maryland. He is listed as Solli, Hanes, 29 yr old emigrated in 1910. He is married to a Christina, 27 yr old who emigrated from Norway in 1912. 2 sons George 4 yr and Howard 4 months. Carla
BertaHello Carla. Thank you for the census-lookup and trying to interpret the last name for Anna. What about the adress? Does it say "160 Richard str., Brooklyn, New York, N Y"? Does that make any sense? Thank you for the censuslookup for Hans. Maybe Anna also used some form of "Soli" in her last name? But I also guess that the adress is a more safe search-tool... But as I said, thank you! Best Regards, Berta
BertaWith a quick search on Ancestry.com, I see that there is a one Hans Solli, - in a database concering the Military - World War 1 Draft Registrations Cards 1917-1918 (with residence in Maryland, Baltimore) an Andrew A. Solli Immigration, Boston Passenger Lists 1891-1943 Could this be the two brothers? As Andreas ( Andrew could be.. ) immigrated to Boston in 1907, maybe there is something about his family in his manifest? Is there someone who could help me with what i says in these listnings? Berta
BriningHi Berta, There is a 160 Richards street in Brooklyn New York so it is a good possibility that is the correct address. I don't know how or where to do a census lookup with just the address. The Andrew and Hans you found could be the brothers. I don't think there would be much information in Andrews manifest since he is the 1st to arrive. Carla
BertaHello Carla! Thank you for your help, once again! And for telling me that there is a street in Brooklyn, with that name. I do not know either how to make a censuslookup with the name. I know. I should have paid subscription to Ancestry a long time ago.. But.. it is the cost, and the fact that I do not live in the US, if there is something wrong with the payment etc.. I know that these may be week exuses, but as I try to help americans in Norway ( as good as I can) for free, I can only be grateful for all help and comments I get! As before, I am very much humble and glad for all help! Berta
BertaI still have not yet found anything on Anna Gulette. Does anyone have any information about a genealogical socity in Brooklyn, who specialises in Norewgian history and familys in Brooklyn? I understand, from reading some articles, that Brooklyn held the largest population of Norwegians at one time, in the US. Then, I guess there must be an interest in preserving history from this area. Although I gather that there may be few left in Brooklyn today who are of Norwegian decent, maybe someone know of anybody who does this? I have searched Cyndi's List, but I did not find anything there. Does anybody here know? Berta
Jo Anne SadlerI have never run across a Norwegian-Brooklyn organization myself. Here are two helpful, free NY research sites: http://www.italiangen.org/NYCDeathSearch.stm www.green-wood.com - go into Burial Inquiry, this is a very old, Protestant cemetery located in Brooklyn. Brooklyn is in Kings County, Manhattan New York County, Queens is Queens County.
BertaHello Jo Anne, thank you for your answer. I see that I have left out an important detail in this new topic. In the same records, where I found that Annas brothers emigrated, it also states, that Anna at that time, was living in Norway. The date was August 16th 1927. But at some time, ergo 1910, she was living in New York. Hans did not have any other sisters with a similar name, and as I have said before, I have found her emigration from Norway, but not her arriving in the USA. As her name is different from when she left Norway, a year earlier ( and three months) she must have probably married between March 6th 1909 and June 19th 1910. She could have stayed in England, and married there, before she went from Hull to the US, she could have been married during the voyage over or after her arrival in the US. And I guess, Anna could have been married in New York. To Mr. Rissoth.. ( or what her last name is.. ) As it is, her brother has her name, when he arrives in New York. He also has her adress. If I could somehow search for the adress in the 1910 census, it would be interesting to see wheter or not Anna or her brother is living there at the time. Carla found that Hans Solli, Annas brother was in Maryland in 1920. His oldest child was 4 years old, so he might be married in 1915. Maybe he was still in New York when the Census was collected. I guess he used the name "Solli" as a last name. Or at least a part of it. I have searched Ellis Island for Anna, under the name Anna Rissoth, but I did not find any match. I searched also the http://www.italiangen.org/NYCDeathSearch.stm database, and there was some names in tKings county who could be plausible. But no exat match. It does seem that finding Anna is nearly impossible. But it may also just be my lack of knowledge too.. Berta
BriningHi Berta You might also consider the NYBROOKLYN-L Click Here and posting a query there. I finally located 160 Richard street on the 1910 census. This may or may not be your Anne but there is one norwegian couple living there. Hans Rosholt age 36 married 7 yr?? Immigrated 1909 Annie age 30 immigrated 1909 Son Anker 8 yr old. Possibly a son by Hans in previous marriage although it says this is the first marriage for both. Carla
BertaThis is brilliant, Carla! This sounds right, according to the Manifest, the last name may well be Rosholt... But, and there are "buts". First. Anna and Hans is supposed to be married for 7 years. But when Anna leave Norway in 1909, she is listed as "widow" which sounds plausible, as her husband died in 1902. But in theory, the could have been married of course. But could the state of time be "months"? and the same for the boy? Then there is the age of Anna.. As she was born in 1872, she would have been 38 years old in 1910. But, I guess.. she might have been "young-looking" and lied about her age. As you say, the boy, Anker could have been a boy from an earlier marrige. The reason for me anyway thinking that this is really "my" Anne. Is the inscription in Hans Andreassen Sollis Manifest. It says that his mothers name is "Grete Solli", and that he has a Sister called Anne/Anna in the US at this adress in Brooklyn. Although.. I am not 100% sure that this is really "my" Anne... Maybe someone other could offer their opinion? I am really thankful for your work, Carla! Thank you soo much! I have good feeling, but as I said, I am not yet ready to "pop the Champagne". Any comments is really welcome! Berta
BriningHi Berta, It does sound possible. I haven't found them in the 1920 census which would make sense if Anna was back in Norway. Anker was born in Norway. It also says that Anne had one child, and that child is living. It is really hard to say with the census, I'm sure things could get confused. I have tried to find Hans and Anker on the emigrant records but no luck. Finding more information on them could help prove or disprove that this is the correct Anna Carla
BertaThank you again, Carla. I do not know what happened to Anna during the period of late 1902 and March 6 1909. In that period, she could very well have given birth to a child. As for the 1920 census.. I do not know when she returned, I just know that in 1927 she is said to live in a nearby town of where her mother Grete Kristiansen (Pettersen) Solli dies. This is in Norway. It also says that she has lived with a man, but this man passed away about 2 months before her mother died. And I think the first name on this man, is "Hans". But, this is a very common name in Norway. I have also not found Hans in the emigrantrecords.. Since it states that they both immigrated in 1909.. It should not be difficult to find them both. Maybe he changed his last name? Although, here is a Bjarne Rolseth, A singer headed for Brooklyn. His age though is 26 in 1909 http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=0500EMIG&gardpostnr=562&merk=562#ovre Here is a "Hans Johansen Rosholt" entering Ellis Island 1902, but when I open the manifest wiht the enlarger, It is the wrong manifest: http://ellisisland.org/search/shipManifest.asp?pID=102745010656&MID=00120965920256229184&order_num=511039347&ORDER_ID=1500313895& He is supposed to be 21 in 1902. Here is something .. rather interesting. http://ellisisland.org/search/shipManifest.asp?pID=101524090199 It is the coupel Hans og Anna Risette.. They are travelling with The Mauritania. But, the date is February 19 (arrival) 1909. This is a month before Anna registers to travel at the policestation in Oslo.. wow... I just remembered something, it was like a "button" switched on... In early 1907, the end of december og 1906, a person got a letter from Anna. I have not read the letter, but an inscription in a diary tells that Anna is in Kristiania( the capital of Norway) and a married man has fallen in love with her, and followed her to Kristiania.. But when she leaves, she is not grouped together with anyone. But maybe he is on the ship still? It is more than two years later, that she emigrates, so it could have just ended.. But It just "came to me" when I read about that Hans might have an child from his prev. marrige.. TC
BertaThe inscription in the diary is something I have mentioned other places, but not here... I looked through this topic and other topics elsewhere about Anna.. I guess I did not think it was relevant, when I found her emigrated as a widow. That goes to show that I should be better to tell about information. I do think that I now have posted all I know as of this date. I do not know if it is still relevant, seeing as she is seemingly travelleing alone. But there are men who state that they are married, but is not connected to any familygroup. I do not know the identity of the man who "followed" Anna to Kristiania. But I think she lived either in Fredrikstad or Borge at the time she moved. The gentleman may have come from almost anywhere, seeing as Fredrikstad lies by the sea, and has always had a trade and commerce with other parts of Norway. In addition it has a military base, but I do not know the extent of this at this time. Berta

Looks like he's going to his brother Eilert Johanson in Idaho... [B)] Jan Peter
BertaThank you for your information, Jan Peter. I guess it still could be him, even if he at that time is travelling for Idaho.. Does anybody know if there is a reason why it is so difficult to find people who immigrated to the US in 1909? Berta
BertaUpdate on the Anna Gulette "story": I have just found that Annas husband was Hans Oskar Myhre. He died in Denmark, at a sanatorium. He died June 11th 1927, and was said to be 54 years old. He was to have a son, called "Anker Myhre". Anker Myhres last known adress ( before June 11th 1927) was to be: 515 L. B. Chester P. A. USA I guess.. The previous found Hans and Anna.. must be the right family! I wonder if someone could scan the cenus for 1910? And could anybody find either Anker or Hans and Anna in the censuses 1910/1920? I do not know when Anna and Hans went back to Norway. I guess they went back, and Anker had found a new family, a occupation, or he is living with his birth-mother? I searched Ancstry.com ( I do not have acces) and found an Anker Myhre in Pennsylvania.. Could, "P. A. " stand for Pennsylvania? He was the supposed to be born in 1901, and was living in Delaware, Penns. ( I could not see the houshold). I can "feel" that I am close... to find the clues here.. But I need some more help. Berta

It would be interesting to know how the name went from Rosholt to Myhre. I don't have access to a 1930 census index. Maybe someone else can find Anker or Anne there. Carla
BertaHello Carla! Thank you for your "lookup"! No wonder why I have not found Hans Myhre emigrated from Norway, as he is originally Swedish.. I am also wondering how the "namechange has happened. Hans died in Denmark, and Anna was in Norway in 1927. I do not know if she went back to America. Does it say what Hans and Anker is working with? And does Anna work? Are there more people in the household? All this is very interesting! And I hope that someone can find them (or just Anker) in the 1930 cenus Thank you, once again Carla! Sincerely, Berta
BriningHi Berta, Hans is a forman at the shipyard and Anker is working as a clerk at Che?? Goodes. Anna is not working and there is no one else living with them. They are living in an apartment on East 12th Street. Carla
BertaThank you, agian, Carla! I am just wondering about the adress. In which county is this, Chester or Delaware? And is it in Philadelphia? Or.. I am not really familiar wiht the location here.. Berta
