Helena Maria Olsdatter or Eriksdatter
alleycatLooking for any information about Helena Olsdatter, who was married to Peder (Ole) Swedin-also spelled Swedeen. She was born March 28, 1836 in Norway and died December 23, 1900 in Dakota County, MN, USA. They were married before 1857 in Norway. A death record at Dakota County courthouse states her name as Helena Eriksdatter. Their children were: Anna Mathilde 3/5/1857, Emma before 1861, Johannes 6/6/1870, Ole 6/6/1870, Pater 12/15/1871, Ella before 1873, Henrietta 9/28/1874, Johannah 6/3/1876, Juline 6/3/1880, Alfred 10/15/1864 and Olivia 12/16/1859.
kjsmacPeder, Mary, Anna Mathilde, Emma, Andrew (born 1860) and Alfred were the children of Peder and Mariah Swedin. They appear in Eureka, Dakota County, Minnesota in the 1860 and 1865 census with the exception of Alfred who was born in 15 Oct 1867. Peder and his wife, Mariah were born in Sweden. Mary was born in Illinois. Mary and her mother appear only in the 1860 and 1865 Census. I can find no death records. Andrew appears in the 1880 census living with his sister Anna after she married Haagen Olson (Oleson). Helene arrived in the US from Norway in April, 1869 with her daughter, Olivia on the Bark Concordia. Digitalarkivet: Emigranter fra Oslo 1867-1930 (ikke komplett). [3169489/440] I have no record of a father, perhaps she was illegitimate. Olivia was born in Norway in 1859. She never married and was living with a half sister, Oline Hagen in the 1920 US Census. She died 14 Nov 1935. The children of Peder and Helene Marie were Ole and Johannes (twins), Peter, Henrietta, Johanna, and Juline. (There is no record of an Ella. It might be Etta, which was the nickname for Henrietta.) These children were all born in Dakota County, Minnesota. This family appears in the 1870 census. I have naturalization for Peder but have been unable to find any immigration information. His daughter was born in Illinois about 1853 or 1854 so they arrived prior to that date. Since they were from Sweden, they haven't shown up in the Digitalarkivet. I don't know where in Sweden they were from. His obituary which is at the Dakota County Historical Society says that he died from being gored and mauled by a bull 6 Apr 1890. . The Swedin family is buried primarily at the Highview and East Christiania cemeteries in Dakota County, Minnesota. I was there last year and have photos of some of the tombstones. The Dakota County HIstorical Society has a good website where you can access census, cemetery and other information. Also try the Dalby Database at dalbydata.com. Be sure to use different kinds of spelling when searching. Names are not always as we know them. Any information you have to share would be welcome.
kjsmacPeder, Some of the information I have found on the web have shown Helsingland, Sweden, as Peter's place of birth. Do you know anything about his background??? alleycatI was so happy to find your reply! Finally, someone has been able to help me clarify the members of this family! I am a great-great-granddaughter to Peter and Helen Swedin. My great-grandfather was their son Peter. I did not know that Peter I had been married twice, so hence the confusion. You provided some valuable information that will help me to search further back to Sweden and Norway. Any documents that you would be willing to share would be wonderful! I have census records, but only a death certificate for Peter II. I have an article about Anna (Swedin) Olson and her husband Haagen Olson that talks about their families. It states that Peter I was born in Helsingsland (Halsingland), Sweden and Mary was born in Ostmark, Sweden. It is interesting, because the article does not mention any of the half brothers and sisters, which makes me wonder if there was some feuding going on. I can e-mail you a copy of it if you would like. I also have information on most of the descendants of Peter and Mary and Peter and Helen. You mentioned that Olivia may have been illegitimate. It's possible that Helen was also married before she married Peter. I do not have any record of a Mary, daughter of Peter and Mariah. I do know that there are other Swedin's (Swedeen) that settled in Illinois, so there may be more of Peter's family there. I, also, have been unable to find information about Peter's immigration. Do you think he may have changed his name when he came here? There are so many variations. It would be nice to know what the original spelling was. If it even was Swedin. Peter was a farmer. I really don't know anymore about him. The family story is that Peter had a pet bull (imagine that) and he turned his back on it and was gored to death. The Swedin family was one of the first to settle in the Christiana area in Dakota county. They may have been intregal in the founding of the Christitan church. I hope to get there this summer to look at church documents. They may have records on the parish in Sweden that the family came from. If you would like to e-mail me, I am at tontam@hotmail.com. My profile is incorrect. My name is Debbie Tammaro and I live in Northern Minnesota. I look forward to hearing from you!
