Descendants of Nels Olsen, Fort Dodge, Iowa
NancyCWe would like help in finding possible descendants of Nels Olsen (1875-1929). Nels was born Nils Olsen Hanakam at Sand, Rogaland Province, Norway, in 1875. His mother was Brønla Andersdotter Helland (1853-1923), and his father was Ole Nilssen Hanakam (1849-76), both of Sand. Ole died shortly after Nils was born, and he and his mother emigrated in 1882, settling in Fort Dodge, Webster County, Iowa. Subsequently, Brønla remarried Osmund J. Aabø from Sauda, Rogaland, Norway, and they had 5 children: John, Ranveg Elizabeth, Anna, Elmer and Selmer. We are fairly certain that Nels was buried in St. Olaf's Cemetery in Douglas Twp. This information is on the Web at http://www.rootsweb.com/~iawebste/stolafscemetery.html under his name. His parents are also listed on that site: Osmund and "Brymla" Johnson. Thanks for any information!
HopkinsThe 1900 US census lists Nels Olson as 24 years old, single, born April 1876 in Norway, immigrated in 1882. He lives with his step-father and mother's family which includes children, John, Annie, Elsie, Elmer and Selm??. Also in the household is a Lara N?anKom, 34 years old, born Norway and immigrated 1892. Nels is listed with occupation of day laborer . The 1910 US census - 'Nils' is still single, 34 years old and lives with his step-father and mother's family in Fort Dodge. He appears to work as a laborer - ditching? (Hard work! very hard work!) The 1920 US census shows Nels still single, still living in his step-father's home. But thankfully he is now employed as a plumber. I don't have access to the 1930 census for that area.
NancyCThank you! This is very helpful. We think we know who the " Lara N?anKom" is, mentioned in the 1900 census. It is probably Lars Åkesson Hanekam, who emigrated sometime after his mother's death in 1890. The year 1892 would be very probable. We have had contact with his descendants for many years, but we had no idea he had lived with these people, who are related on the other side of the family! Can you tell us which of the other children are living at home in 1910 and 1920? That would be helpful!
HopkinsLars? Perhaps I really need to glance at that again :-) Oops - of course! that MUST actually be Lars - listed as male - also day laborer. In all three censuses - his step father, mother and half siblings all use the surname Johnson. Siblings in the household in 1910 - John O. Johnson, 24 yrs.; Annie, 23; Elizabeth, 21; Elmer, 18; and Selmer, 13?. 1920 - Siblings still at home - Anna, 32; Elsie, 30; and Selmer, 22. Glad it helped.
