HopkinsIn 1865 Abraham and his family still at home were living on the farm called Tjørve, in Lista. http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1865&knr=1041&kenr=010&bnr=0008&lnr=000 It is a long time period between the 1801 and 1865 censuses. Abraham born in 1822 would be between those but the parish records for the area which would probably include 1822 (+/-) births/baptisms have been copied to microfilm available through the LDS Family History Centers. You do keep listing the names of various farms in that district (with minor spelling variations), Brekne, Tjørve, and Kviljo?
debbie jacobsenIn 1865 Abraham and his family still at home were living on the farm called Tjørve, in Lista. Right, it was Abraham's father I was "looking for"..........I found him.......now I'm stuck again. WHO WERE OLE MADSEN's PARENTS? OLE MADSEN 1657 or 1658 - 1706 Hauge på Lista. Do the LDS records go that far back? It turns out that ABRAHAM MATHIASSEN (1820 or 1822 - 1894) was born at Midhassel (half way between Tjørve & Kviljo). He was married to Katrine Elizabeth Danielsdtr (1829-1866) from Brekne. He died as the result of an accident involving a horse. In 1851 Abraham apparently inherited some land - an "arve fest" - Flånedugen fra Ellert Jakobi Olsen (who might have been a great uncle) ABRAHAM MATHIASSEN's father was OLE MATHIAS MATHIASSEN (1795 - ?) from Midhassel. In 1817 he married JOHANNE MARIE OLSDTR. from Hananger If read the bygdebok right, OLE MATHIAS MATHIASSEN's father was OLE MATHIASSEN (1765 - 1846) also from Midhassel. In 1790 he married INGEBORG ANSTEINDTR (1759 - 1807) OLE MATHIASSEN's father was MATHIAS OLSEN (1739 - 1796) from Vestre Hauge. In 1761 he married MALENE JAKOBSDTR. (1735 - 1817) from Brekne [farm next to Tjørve] MATHIAS OLSEN's father was OLA HAUGE [bapitised OLE] (1697 - 1763) [I assume he lived på Vestre Hauge]. He married JORUN KRISTENSDTR. (1690 - ?) from Midhassel/Tveit. They were divorced in 1754. (how many people got divorced in the 18th century?) Ole Hauge was a "lensman" sheriff or constable and he was a black smith. It's interesting that he used a place or farm name rather than a family name. OLA HAUGE's father was OLE MADSEN (1657/58 - 1706) from Hauge. He was married to Brynhild Øysteinsdtr from Raastad [Raastad spelled this way seems to be the place name, it's not too far from V. Hauge. When a person takes on the gaardsnavn, it seems to be spelled Råstad.] WHO WERE OLE MADSEN's PARENTS?
HopkinsI gave you a link earlier to the article about Norwegian church records where you'll be able to learn much more detail. But briefly, "In Norway, the first mention of parish registers is in 1668, when the priests were requested to maintain such a register. Although this request did not become law until 1685, some priests in Norway had already begun keeping such registers in the first half of the 1600’s.... Unfortunately, most priests in Norway did not start keeping parish registers until several decades later: only 127 parishes have such registers that date from before 1700. Furthermore, fires and other calamities have resulted in the loss of numerous parish registers over the past 300 years." (Source - Follesdal, Ancestors From Norway website) Check the LDS library catalog online at www.familysearch.org -- choose a Place search - enter Lista and follow the links to the resources they have available. Under church records it should clarify what records they have copies of. Good luck
