Info on Hegg & Hagelie Surnames
lillebergtlI am searching for some information regarding two sets of ancestors from Norway. HEGG: My great grandmother Inga was born on a ship to Buffalo, NY from Norway on Dec 21, 1882. Her mother (unknown) died on the ship during childbirth. Her father was Louis Torgerson Hegg born 6/17/1858 in Ullensaker, Akershus, Norway. Louis also had a brother Ole who adopted Inga once in the US. I would like to know the name of Louis's wife and possilby a marriage record and ship record so I know what ship she died on. Also, I am looking for immigration, birth, and death information for a Halvor H. Hagelie, born in Hjelmeland, Norway and his wife Liva, born in Hatedervedt, Stavanger, Norway. His first known son, Christ, was born in 1847 in Ossian, IA, which mean immigration was prior to that year.
BriningEast Immanuel Cemetery Traill County, North Dakota Hagali, Christopher, b. 1857, d. 1925, [AB] Hagali, Halvor, fodt 22 Dec 1829, dode 9 Aug 1907, s/w Liva, [AB] Hagali, Liva, fodt 9 Jan 1823, dode 10 Oct 1894, Hustru of (Wife of) Halvor Hagali, [AB] Click Here The 1900 census indicates that Halvor was born Dec 1818 and immigrated in 1854 Christopher is listed in Trail County Index to Pioneers click here along with a Sever who could be his brother. Hagelie, Christopher Asheim, Marthe Mr. b 1857 IA; Married 1880 I found the family in the 1860 Fayette county Iowa census Holver age 35, wife Le?? age 36 Sons Holver 7, Sever 5,Christopher 4, Lo?? age 1 In 1870 Halver is 50, Liva 47, the son Holver is not listed and additional children are Anne 9, John 7. In the 1880 census he is listed as Halvor Haylie age 60 I would guess that the cemetery transcription has the wrong year for Halver's birth. Maybe it was 1819?? Carla

BriningI have found a possiblity in the 1865 census but you should know that 1st names were often changed when emigrants came to America. On the Haga farm (could have been changed to Hegg in America) in the 1865 census Click Here There is a Gustav Torgersen about the correct age with a brother Olaus Torgersen In the LDS IGI Olaus has a birthdate of 17 JUN 1858 !!! Click Here Gustav's birthdate is May 4 1857 Click Here I found Ole Hegg in the 1900 census and he was born Feb 1849. At first I thought that Gustav was Louis but it looks like Olaus is. When did Louis die? There is also a death record on the LDS which lists death date for Olaus as 1920. There is one Olaus Torgerson in the emigrants from Kristiana who might fit but he is not listed as married. He appears to be traveling with a Martin Torgerson Click Here
lillebergtlThanks for all the information! I grew up in Traill County, ND, and all of my ancestors are from that area. I had just never been over to that cemetery and checked out the names. Also thanks for the leads on the possible ship that may have carried my great great grandfather here. I've concluded that he was Olaus "Louis" Hegg (Andersen, Haga, etc!) I hope I am able to eventually find out his 1st wife's name (he married Martha Duckstad here in the US) and birth dates. His daughter, Inga, was never accepted as a true Hegg to the Ole Hegg family since she was both adopted and her uncle was only half-brothers to her dad, so little was told to her about where she came from. Thanks again!
