Freya 1850 Passenger List
nancy	Our known family records indicate that Martha Soende (born 1875) and several of her grown and/or married children including I/Engebor (married to Erick Engen), Anna (married to Arne-Erick Field), Kari (married to Ole Bole), Gure Ranum (married to Nils Arneson) and Jule Synde came over from Drammen on the Freya on 1850. It appears that they came from Sor-Aurdal parish and that their father (Martha's husband may have been Jorgen Soende). The passenger list for the Freya, though, is very confusing and does not seem to match data that I have. First, it does not appear that Martha Soende/Synde was on the boat? The passenger list does seem to be correct for Kari Jorgensdatter born Oct 14 1819 and died Oct 7 1887 (Hauge Lutheran Cemetery , Daleyville, WI) who's listed as #112. Another indirect relative would be Ingeborg Jorgensdatter (#38) who was clearly misaged at 77 (more likely around 41). I am particularly interested in Anna Jorgensdotter (listed as #36) who is my direct relative. She was born in 1811 in Norway and died in 1880 in Wisconsin. Her age of 35 is roughly correct. She supposedly married in Norway Arne-Erick Field but there is no one on the list who matches this name. Eric Torgerson Field (#37) is the best possibility. Anna and Arne-Erick had 8 children and at least six of them appear on this list (though ages seem off): Arne Erickson (#25), Jule Erickson (#26), Nicholas Erickson (#27), Christian Erickson (#28) and Martha Ericksdotter (#39) and Anna Ericksdatter (#41). The two other children who do not appear on this list - Elling and Edward. My direct relative is, I believe, Martha Ericksdotter (#39). She was born May 14 1837 in Norway and died July 6 1930 in Black Earth, WI. She was 13 when she came over. The age listed is 43 which I think must have been a transcription error. She brought a spinning wheel over on the Freya and it is still in our family's possession. Martha married Sever Severson on July 6, 1855 in Black Earth, WI. Could that Sever Severson be the same one as #48 on the passenger list? I don't know where Sever was born but the date we have for his birth is Feb 9 1829.
Borge	Hello Nancy Did you take a look at the scan of the actual list? I don't know about the possible errors that might appear on the original list, but we often find them. Is it possible that the mentioned persons which you do not find on the list arrived on another ship? Børge Solem
nancy	Thank you, Borge, for the response. No, I haven't seen the original scan. How do I find that? Also, were passenger lists made upon arrival in New York or upon departure from Norway in Drammen? If this was made in New York (explaining the problems with names), would it be helpful to look at the Norwegian records? Do passenger lists from Norway exist? What does it mean "house on deck"? Would you be willing to look at the other post that I made - Martha Synde Society under the general forum section? Thank you for all of your hard work in making this possible. nancy	Borge, I forgot to answer your second question. I have no idea if they came over on another ship. I need to get more information on Martha Synde/Soende, I think, before I can ascertain that. Thanks again, Nancy.
Borge	You will be able to see the scan by clicking the link on the passenger list saying "[scan of the list]" in the space between the heading and the table with the list. The New York lists were made up at arrival to New York, and as far as I know, there are no existing lists from the departure ports, if they were ever set up. Børge Solem
Borge	I forgot; "Houses on deck" indicates the kind of acomodation they had on the ship. They did apparently not travel on the "Between deck" also called "Steerage". The tickets for the "Houses on deck" (More like cabins) were more expensive then the "between deck" Børge Solem Edited by - borge
