Judie	I used the digitalarkivet successfully in the past but recently when I went to the site I found that the format had changed. I know that Erik Johannesen is in the 1900-telling for 1425 Hafslo. but I just can't figure out how to enter the new format to find him again. This is one branch of our family that appears to have remained in Norway and I hope to find more information on his children. Thanks, Judie

I looked through it and will now go back to the digitalarkivet and see if I can get anywhere. repete009, I looked at your website for the 1900-telling and see that the information there is different from what I printed the end of 2002. There is no sign of Erik Johannesen (born 1848) , his wife and children but there is an Ingeborg Johannesdt. (born 1853)- possibly Erik's sister? Erik also shows up on the 1865-telling for 0521 Oyer with his parents and siblings but there is no Ingeborg. His mother Ane Engebresdatter is sister to my ancestor Mathea. Thanks, Judie

Judie	It appears that there are two Erik Johannesens and I did not pick up the differences in the birth years. Not very observant, am I? I know for certain Erik born to Ane and Johannes is the one I want. Now that I realize that was a false lead, I'll have to try again. It would be nice to find any of Ane Engebretsdatter & Johannes Eriksen's children. Thanks for your help.

There were several more than two Erik Johannessens of that approximate age in Norway - I only listed the two that seemed to fit the different situations you briefly described. Hopkins	You've somehow limited it to 'Engebretsen' names and that's not the same -- her name was listed as Engebretsdatter Try limiting less for each search (I think of it as allowing for spelling variations) - for example first name begins with (starting on) then enter only An do the same with the Last name ... begins with (starting on) .... Enge
Judie	Thanks for both those sites. Yes it certainly looks like Erik and Christine emigrated. I have a cousin in Wisconsin - maybe she can track them down there. When I went to the digitalarkivet site and requested 'first name' 'contains' and typed in 'eri' I was sent here: http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webreg.exe What do I do to move forward from this page? Everything I click sends me back to the previous page.

Judie	When I clicked on the last web page I posted above, it comes up but the page does not look the same. When I was sent there, there was a list of possible names beginning with 'eri' . I checked off 'Erik' but then couldn't progress to the page that lists the county options. I hope this make sense to you! I really do appreciate the websites you found!
Hopkins	In the Digitalarkivet narrow down the area FIRST -- then search for names, sex, marital states, or whatever series of delimiters you choose when you have reached the correct area database. . If you are really determined to do nationwide searching use the other census databases - http://www.rhd.uit.no/indexeng.html But remember to include some real flexibility in your nationwide searches - things might not be spelled or recorded exactly as you expect them. Study the instructions and learn how to use the wildcard functions in RHD searches.
Brining	One thing you have to do when searching on the digitalarkivet is to use the "Ta bort søkeresultat" or "abandon search results" when starting a new search or if you have used the back button, what ever selections you have made remain in memory and you have to clear them out. It looks like when you access one page from a link those results are permanent[?] I used your link and couldn't get it to abandon the results. Anyway If you click on the English icon at the bottom of the page it will take you to the main page and you can start over or click on one of the census years at the top. There is also a "oppehev alle val" or abandon all choices button on the database selector page which will clear the database selections you have made Hope this makes some sense. Carla
Judie	Thank you for The Norwegian Historical Data Center webpage. It seems to be easier to use. I went searching and I found Erik's brother Johannes in the 1875 census at http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1875&knr=0521&kenr=006&bnr=0030&lnr=00 Can you please tell me what does 'Tjenestegut ug Gaardsarbeide' mean?I have some limited Norwegian words but this is not included. Thanks.
Judie	Thanks for the information Carla. I will keep that in mind. However, if the Norwegian HIstorical Data Center turns out to be easier to use, I may spend my time at that site. Are there any advantages to using the digitalarkivet over the NHDC?
Judie	I guess one advantage to learning to navigate the digitalarkivet is that it includes the 1801 census. I do know that 'ug' means unmarried.

Hopkins	The Digitalarkivet includes a huge assortment of databases for various parts of Norway. Beyond censuses there are emigration registers, church records for some areas, tax lists, probate indexes, military rolls, etc. and more are added all the time. Using censuses in the search engine of the Digitalarkivet it is possible to make lists of all the farm names in use in any included parish/district in a census and analyse the names (including their variant spellings) in various parts of the country. I find it essential to be able to use both 'nationwide' database websites - each has their own strengths, quirks and are BOTH very very useful.
Judie	Thanks, Jo Anne. That is a great site. I now know Johannes was a young male servant and a field hand. Hopkins, I know the Digitalarkivet is a wealth of information but much of it seems to be in Norwegian. With the web site that Jo Anne gave me, maybe I can make better use of the Digitalarkivet. Church records would be a great help if they contain information prior to the 1801 census. I certainly have run into variant spellings of Engebretson, Engelbretson, Ingelbretsen, etc. When I first started to search my family, I didn't realize these were all the same. I found that the father's name was spelled differently for each of his five children! Thankfully the mother's name remained constant. Thanks for all your help.
