Larson's
Cole7882My grandfather was named Jeffie Arnold Larson and was born around 1913. I am told he was 100% Norwegian, but as he passed away when I was very young I do not know very much about him. I know he ran a dairy/creamery in Arcadia, WI at one time. Any suggestion on where to find out more information about my grandfather's genealogy?
BriningGetting a copy of his death certificate Click Here and copies of obituaries would help. The SSDI lists Name Birth Death Last Residence Last Benefit SSN Issued JEFFIE LARSON 09 Jul 1913 Nov 1985 54115 (De Pere, Brown, WI) (none specified) 395-09-1881 Wisconsin Click Here you can order a copy of the social security record. Sometimes 100% Norwegian means both parents were Norwegian so he could have been born in the US. Talk to any family members that might give you some information. Check and see if Arcadia has a historical society, they may have some information on him. If you can find out where he was married, a copy of the marriage certificate could give you information. Good Luck Carla
HopkinsStart by searching for and/all American documents about him. His death certificate, obituary, church records where he might have been a member, all the US federal censuses and state or local censuses that he appears in, etc. You want to find out where he was born, who his parents were, where and when they were each born and when they came to the US. When you find a clear link to emigrants from Norway that you can identify by name, birth year and at least approximate immigration year - then you might be able to track the family in Norway. You will find a number of excellent helps in online articles that you can study at your own pace. http://www.rootsweb.com/~wgnorway/new.htm http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/articles.html
Jean MarthalerHi, in looking at the 1920 census I find in Modena Township, Buffalo County, Wisconsin the following family: Albert Larson age 38 born in Wisconsin with parents born in Norway. wife Mathilda age 31 born in Wisconsin and parents born in Wisconsin Children: Eddie age 12 born in Wisconsin Mabel J. age 10 born in Wisconsin Jeffie A. age 6 born in Wisconsin. Listed above this family is an older woman and her son who could possibly be the mother of Albert Larson, their info is: Hjertru Larson age 78 born in Norway and immigrated in 1870 or 1871. Erik Larson age 39.
Jean MarthalerHere is more information on this family. 1870 Census, Modena Township, Buffalo County, Wisconsin Jens Larson age 30 born in Norway Anna Seiverson age 29 born in Norway Children all born in Wisconsin Louis age 6 Amos age 4 Louie age g Sievert age 1 _______________________ 1880 Census, Modena Township, Buffalo County, Wisconsin James J. Larson age 40, born Norway Anna age 39, born Norway Children all born in Wisconsin Louisa age 16 Amos age 14 Loui age 12 Sever age 11 Ellen age 6 Anna age 5 Julia age 2 Emma age 11 months ___________________ 1900 Census, Modena, Buffalo County, Wisconsin J Larson, born in Norway Feb 1840 (the first name is hard to read) Anna , born in Norway July 1840 Children all born in Wisconsin Syver born March 1869 Albert born February 1881 Julius born July 1884 Emma born June 1879 I do believe this is Albert and his parents and siblings. This is the Albert Larson who I believe is the father of your Jeffie A. Larson. Jean Marthaler
Jean MarthalerOne other item I needed to include about this family is that in the 1900 census for the Larson family it says that (Jens, James) Larson and Anna have been married for 37 years, they have had 13 children with 8 of them still living and Jens immigrated in 1852 and Anna in about 1863. Jean
Jean Marthaler Just for your interest, here is the family in the 1880 census on the Digitalarkivet. One item to point out here is that there is an error in the Digitalarkivet record for this family. When you look at the actual census page the family's last name is not Johnson, it is LARSON. Norwegians in Wisconsin according to 1880 Census Given name Family name Sex Age Remarks Children Father born Mother born Page Circuit County 6530 James J Johnson m 40 f N N N 365 Modena Buffalo Co. 6531 Anna J Johnson f 39 wife N N N 365 Modena Buffalo Co. 6532 Louisa J Johnson f 16 Wis N N 366 Modena Buffalo Co. 6533 Amons J Johnson m 14 Wis N N 366 Modena Buffalo Co. 6534 Loui J Johnson m 12 Wis N N 366 Modena Buffalo Co. 6535 Sever J Johnson m 11 Wis N N 366 Modena Buffalo Co. 6536 Ellen J Johnson f 6 Wis N N 366 Modena Buffalo Co. 6537 Anna J Johnson f 5 Wis N N 366 Modena Buffalo Co. 6538 Julia J Johnson f 2 Wis N N 366 Modena Buffalo Co. 6539 Emma J Johnson f 11/12 Jun Wis N N 366 Modena Buffalo Co
Jean MarthalerIn doing research on this family I am wondering if the ancestry of Jeffie's grandfather, Jens Larson might be thru a Jens J. Hovland. I am putting this info on this list to see if anyone has any insight on this. In the book Nordmændene i Amerika by Martin Ulvestad it has in the Buffalo County, Wisconsin section a Jens J. Hovland who was one of the earliest Norwegian settlers in Buffalo County. It says Jens and a number of the other settlers are from Lyster in Sogn og Fjordane. In the 1880 census Jens is listed as James J. Larson. I putting this info out just in case there is someone with some knowledge of this area of Sogn who might be able to check on this. JEAN
Cole7882Thanks for all of your help! I remember hearing about an aunt Mabel and I know I have met cousin's of my father with the last name Severson. I have also talked to my grandmother some who says Jeffie A Larson's parents were Albert and Mathilda. So it looks like your information is sending me in the right direction. Thanks again for all of your help. I really didn't know where to start and with my grandmother just turing 93, I wanted to find out as much as I could about my grandfather and my grandmother's families before it was too late. Nicole
Cole7882From talking more to my grandmother and aunt It turns out my aunt Mabel had married a Severson, so that is where i have heard that name. And Albert and Mathilda along with their children Eddie, Mabel (Oscar), Evelyn, and Erwin(or Irwin) are buried in the cemetary at the Lyster church. As there were many Albert Larson we found it be searching for Mathilda in the church records. I believe my grandfather was originally buried there also but was later moved to a cemetary in De Pere, WI. It is believed that the great grandparents were buried at the other Lutheran church/cemetary in the area, but my family has not been able to find it or there plots. Was there any information as to Mathilda's maiden name? I believe it was Nielson or Nelson. I had noted in my first post that it was believed my grandfather was 100% Norwegian so I like to trace back both parents if at all possible. Thanks again for all of your help--the websites also look like they will be a great tool in my search! Nicole
Cole7882I forgot to mention it was Lyster church in buffalo county.
BriningThe 1910 census says they have been married for 3 years so that would mean they married in 1906 or 1907. You can order a search for the marriage records at this siteClick Here or you could get a copy of birth certificates of the children. That should give you her maiden name. Carla
