Gloppen -Gard Hauge Ytre - Kristoffer/Anna Hauge -
carrajI would very much appreciate some help with information from the 1900 Census for this Gardnr 67, and particularly Bruksnr 5. Family history says that Kristoffer Hauge emigrated to US because his oldest brother "inherited the family farm" . Also because Kristoffer's father remarried after Kristoffer's mother died. Kristoffer emigrated in 1908 at the age of about 22 after working building the railroad from Bergen to Oslo in 1907. He was preceded to America by Uncles Abraham, Martinus, Rasmus, Christ, and Gilbert Hauge. I find no evidence of those uncles anywhere on #67 ... am I expecting the wrong thing? In this 1900 Census record, Kristoffer and his sister Anna appear to be listed as "servents" in the household? I'm having trouble figuring out the relationship of all the "Hauge" families and members listed. I can see that some of the people on the farm are apparently the older generation receiving "kår". But I can't really tell who belongs to who ... Any light that anyone could help shed to put me on the right track would be very welcome. Thanks much! http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=f01445.wc2&gardpostnr=191#nedre
jwiborgHi Carra, try to compare the census-1900 with census-1865. Census-1865, farm Yttrehauge (Yttre Hauge): Gabriel Jørgensen, housefather 49 Kristense Abrehamsdatter his wife 43 Rasmus Gabrielsen their son 14 Mathias Gabrielsen their son 12 Christen Gabrielsen their son 9 Gabriel Gabrielsen their son 3 Jøda Gabrielsdatter their daughter 22 Rakkel Gabrielsdatter their daughter 7 Jøde Rasmusdatter his mother widow 75 (Gabriel Jørgensen's mother) This looks to be their son Jørgen Gabrielsen (aka Jørgen Hauge) in census 1865. He is noted as Jørgen Monsd.!!, but the exclamation marks tells that there is something wrong with his last name. It's also indicating that he is a female (Monsdatter). This is the only Jørgen in Gloppen that fits. Census-1900, farm Hauge Ytre: Jørgen Hauge, housefather, b.1846 Valborg Hauge, his wife, b.1843 Aalfodt NB Gabriel Hauge, (their) son, roadworker, b.1874 Kristoffer Hauge, (their) son, servant, b.1885 Anna Hauge, (their) daughter, servant, b.1882 Martha Hauge, lodger belonging to family, servant, b.1869 (Could be a cousin to Gabriel, Kristoffer & Anna?) Kristence Hauge, lodger belonging to family, widow, b.1823 (aka Kristense Abrehamsdatter, Jørgen Hauge's mother, ref. census-1865) Helge Egge, lodger belonging to family, b.1840 Breim NB Berhard Lund, single lodger, agent, b.1877 Bodø Nordland So all these ones from census-1865 would be uncle and aunts to Kristoffer & Anna from census-1900: Rasmus Gabrielsen b.1852 Mathias Gabrielsen b.1854 Christen Gabrielsen b.1857 Gabriel Gabrielsen b.1863 Jøda Gabrielsdatter b.1844 Rakkel Gabrielsdatter b.1859 This page tells that Anna & Kristoffer emigrated on April 27th, 1908. Destination reads "To their uncle" Rasmus G. Hauge b.1852 is travelling together with them. He is a carpenter, and has been home in Norway for a visit. The destination for Anna & Kristoffer in the Ellis Island manifest reads "brother R G Haugen Aitken Minnesota." It should probably say uncle Rasmus Gabrielsen Hauge, b.1852...[:I] Could not find Rasmus in census-1900, so he emigrated probably before that. In addition, Jørgen looks to be the oldest son of the children to Gabriel & Kristense, and would then be the one in line to take over the Yttre Hauge farm when their parents retired. You should not expect any brothers or sisters to Jørgen on the Yttre Hauge farm (gnr 67 bnr 5) in census-1900. The brothers would have to buy their own farms, his sisters would also have to move out, and probably marry one with a farm... [:)] Jan Peter

Martha looks to be spelled Marthe there. I would expect her mother or father to be a Gabrielsen (-datter), but could not find any... There is one Marthe with is the daughter of Anna Gabrielsdatter, but this Anne's marriage record states that her father was Gabriel Jonsen. It should have said Gabriel Jørgensen... [:I] Jan Peter
carrajJan, as usual, you are an immense help!!! I couldn't locate the family in the 1865 Census for some reason, but you accomplished exactly what I was trying to!! THANK YOU! Even though I was looking for Jørgen/parents/siblings in 1865, I was experiencing temporary insanity by looking for the brothers on the 1900 farm ... no idea what I was thinking there ... I know better too! (Guess I'll claim that it's because I have been up all night (it's now 6:45 AM here, and I was too busy having fun researching to get to bed yet!!) Thanks for finding Jørgen in 1865, I hit the brick wall there and not sure I would have been able to find him even with more work, so I really appreciate it! Thanks too for the emigration links for the other 3 Hauge's ... I had just emailed the link to Kristoffer's 1908 record to his son, who is elderly and not well, and is thrilled to be learning more about his father's history. The first to emigrate, Christen Gabrielsen Haugen (they all changed their name to Haugen upon arrival in America) became a sheriff in Aitken Minnesota after he emigrated, and the rest of the family followed him there! So his emigration info is especially appreciated! Thanks again!

carrajThank you Jan for the additional information! An unexpected bonus! Am putting this all together and this is a very welcome addition! Am having difficulty with the one of your kind gifts above: Elias Gabrielsen Hauge, b. 1879, em. 1893. He's like the next generation ... but haven't been able to place him yet ... I'll keep at it, but if you know where he fits right off the bat, I'd appreciate the pointer. Thank you again, Jan!
HopkinsElias is shown with his parents leaving from Bergen in 1893 http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=EMIBERG&gardpostnr=32147&sokefelt=skjul
carrajThanks very much! Good grief ... this throws a whole new light on things ... Elias's father is the son who "inherited" the farm supposedly and stayed in Norway! I hadn't even looked at emigration records in his regard! This is truly how one gets addicted to the mystery!! Opens up a whole new area of research!! Thanks for your kind help, I appreciate it!
BriningI think you are mixing families. Elias is the son of Gabriel Monsen Hauge.
