possible wrong surname on list
kjenterIt is possible that my great grandmother Karen Olesd had the wrong surname on the list. I know she came in 1871 from Lier to Alpena Co, Michigan. She joined a bother who had been in the USA since 1867 and her parents and 3 other siblings joined them in 1872 On the Digitalarkievet site I find a Karen Hans, age 23 Domicile Lier, Destnation Port Huron, Michigan. She left Kristiana on the ship Hero from the Gunnestad & Co. Line. They departed 1 Sept 1871. My cousins mom just told me that Karen told the first real thing that happened in America at that that time that she always talked about was the big fire in Chicago and that started onthe 8th of Oct 1871 in the O'Leary;s's barn. That probably happened right fter she arrived in Alpena. She also talked about smoke in the Alpena area. She thought it had drifted to Michigan from Chicago, but my cousin also said that there was some forest fires around Alpena Co at the same time. There aren't any other females with name Karen that would have come about this time (1871). Is it possible that this Karen Hans is really my Karen Olesd???? The age matches what she would have been in1971, 23 years old. She did not marry until 1879 in Alpena her husband was Martin Olesen, same last name, different family. thanks Karen Jenter Michigan
BriningThere are Karen Hansd. listed in the 1865 census close to this age so it could be one of them. The person above her on the list is Christian Hans. Holmeneie so transcriber could have written the wrong name or she was married before she left Norway. If you rent the films for the original passenger list you might find more information on this Karen. According to Corresponding ships on this site Click Here the most like ship would be S/S Abyssinia Cunard Line. You could also check the out migrants in the Parish registers for Lier to see if you could find when Karen actualy left. Carla
kjenterHi Carla, I want to thank you again for answering. I need to ask one more question. A ship would have left Norway probably the ship Hero. Would this ship have sailed to England and then got on the SS Abysinnia in England and came to NY??? Can you help me to find the film to rent at my LDS for this ships list. I have not rented ships lists before, and I don't know for sure where to look for ships lists at the LDS. Karen didn't married until after she arrived in the USA. She married Martin Olesen in 1879 at the Norwegian Lutheran Church in Alpena MI, so she would have been Olsd when she came her. thanks again so much for all your continued hlep!!!! Karen
