| Hilmar Sorensen - Buksnes- 1900 |
| Cheerio119 | My maternal grandfather was Hilmar Sorensen, born July 7, 1884 in Buksnes, Vestvagoy, Nordland. I have the 1900 census information on the domicile of Orgotten. He was the 4th of 6 children. His father was Soren M. Nilssen and mother was Marta Karlsdatter. In the early 1900's he left on a ship for America (I do not know what boat) and never returned to Norway or the Lofoten Islands. (but he loved dried whitefish all of his life!) How do I go about finding out about his relatives in Norway? We do not think any others emigrated to the US. Hilmar was a carpenter in Brooklyn, NY and died in 1957. |
| Hopkins | Hilmar appears in the 1910 and 1920 US census in Brooklyn with his given name slightly altered? If yes, then those two censuses list his year of immigration to the US as either 1903 or 1904 -- the time period when you'd expect to find him arriving through Ellis Island.
In Buksnes you could study the parish records for detailed information about each of those siblings (and the niece) from the Norwegian census entry AND his parents. The census gave you birth location and at least approximate birth years for each of his family members. Parish church records for Buksnes (covering time period 1704-1930) are available in the US on microfilm which can be ordered and used at any LDS Family History Center. The LDS library catalog also indicates that a local 2 volume history/genealogy book has been published for Buksnes and is available on LDS microfilm.
