Nilsen from Stavanger
fredheffernanI am starting to trace my mother Lillian Heffernan nee Simkins side of the family. Her Grand parents were Jacob and Marie Nilsen who immigrated from Stavanger Norway to Ames Iowa in 1882. I have no information on the history of the Nilsen family in Stavanger. Supposedly Jacob's Nilsens wife Marie's maiden name was Nilsen also. Any help with locating relatives or info would be appreciated My e mail is heffernan711@hotmail.com Fred Heffernan Rock Island Illinois
HopkinsI can't find any Norwegian born persons using the surname Simkins in any index of censuses for the state of Iowa. The only Jacob/Jakob Nilsen/Nelson near Ames I can find in online sources was a Jakob Nelson who was born about 1816 just north of Stavanger but who immigrated to the US and the Story County area in 1855/1856. When were your Jacob and Marie Nilsen each born? Was Lillian also born in Norway? Were there spelling variations for the surnames they may have used in the Story County area?
fredheffernanSorry I did not explain my posting correctly or fully My ancestors were Jakob and Marie Nilsen and thier daughter Martha who left from Stavanger in 1882 and arrived at Ames Iowa. They only stayed a short time in Ames and then they went to Leonard North Dakota where they had a daughter Nellie. Jakob died there and his wife Marie married a Charles Harlow from Canada They had 4 children of the 4, only 2 lived, Luther (Tupper) and Asenath both of them died in Missoula Montana in Jun 1979, but back to Martha she married a James Simkins in Deer Loge Montana and moved to Blue Island Illinois with 6 kids (my mother Lillian Simkins was one of them) where she died in 1928. I hope that clears it up a little bit
