I have also asked this question previously at this forum, but as I got new information I want to try one more time.
I'm looking for information about Jon Britanus Knudsen Hjelle, often called John Knudsen (or Knudson). His father were Knut Torbjørnsson and his mother were Berte Karine Hansdatter. He had two brothers and one sister. The brothers were Hans Zakarias (my great grandfather) and Ole Hjelle. His sister were named Torine Karine. He was born 28th of September 1858 in Volda, Norway and left for America 1881.
In 1881 he were in Cass county.
In 1883 he were in Richland county.
In 1885 he were in Burleigh county.
I also know that he died before 1903.
However, the track of his life in America stopped in Burleigh 1885. The main problem with that is that all the census records of North Dakota were destroyed in a fire in 1890 or 1900. Any suggestions of where I could continue the search is very welcome. Maybe there were a natural route for him to follow from Burleigh westwards?

I don't know anything about wife or children, however I know he worked for a person called Hans Nes on his farm somewhere near Fargo, and he also worked on a boat going up and down "red river". Doubt that will help thouhg? |

The Federal census of 1890 was destroyed, not the 1900. The Red River separates North Dakota and Minnesota and Fargo is located on the North Dakota side. He could have easily died on the Minnesota side. |

It's a great site, but I ended up with no hits after an hour scanning. Could we conclude that he isn't barried in North Dakota? |
| Jo Anne Sadler | Well, it is a possibility. It is always difficult to track people who did not get married. They moved around more. People generally went to a place where they knew people, worked for awhile and then moved on to better opportunities. You also have a fairly common name.
The free Minnesota Death Index doesn't start until 1905 but the historical society keeps adding earlier records, you might want to check back with them periodically:
