Family history of Paul Johansen
Alleul	My father, Paul Johansen was born March 26. 1881 on the Island of Erlandit in the area of Heroy. I would like to find out more about his parents and grandparents. I was not able to discover anything about the island of Erlandit, but I visited there by boat in about 1997. The island was the property of the Johansen family at that time, but nothing is there now. When he came to the United States they changed the name to Anderson, which was his Mother's maiden name. Paul had brothers named George, Haldor, and Edward. I think Paul immigrated to the US in 1900. I would appreciate any information that someone may know about the family name, origin, or the island of Erlandit.
Hopkins	The 1900 Norwegian census for Herøy i Nordland shows a Paul Johansen with brothers Jørgen (often 'Americanized' to George), Heldor (mispelled in the census or later Haldor?), and Alfon (maybe later Edward?). They are living with their parents (both with patronymic surnames of Andersen/Andreasen) and the farm in that census is called 'Glein under Inderodden'. I don't have a map that shows any Erlandit - but one little map book does indicate that Inderodden is on an unnamed island to the northwest of the parish church location at Herøy. I wanted to peek at US census indexes to see if any additional identifying information could be found. Emigrants database of those leaving from the port of Trondheim shows a couple of Johansens (a Paul and a Jørgen) from Herøy leaving shortly after 1900 and heading for Inwood, Iowa? But those are pretty big leaps to take with too little information (yet).

Alleul	Thank you both so very much. I think we now have discovered more information than we ever knew for the past 100 years about this family. Although we saw, on the island of Erlandet, the place where the farm had been we never knew the name…”Glein under Inderodden”. I think my father, Paul, came to some little towns in Iowa named Manley and Kenset, those may be near to Inwood. So much of this information seems to fit. My 1st Cousin, Liala Reseland, lives in Ardalstangen, and her father was Alfon. I had understood that Paul’s great grandfather owned several islands in the same area of Erlandet. This family apparently had some connection to the Dutch Royalty from the Andersen/Andreasen name back about 4 generations from Paul Johansen.

I find Glein as a farm in Dønna, but that is probably no connection.
Hopkins	Manly and Kensett are in north-central Iowa (Worth County) but Inwood is in the far north-west corner of the state (Lyon County) almost on the river border with the Dakota states. But I still can't find any of them in the US census indexes for those locations in Iowa. Maybe they didn't stay in the area long, or lived just across a nearby county border. Oh well, not important - you've got earlier Norway area and resources to keep you busy for at least several earlier generations!
