Knudt Iver Hilmen, Dakota immigrant
oghillMy great-grandfather was Knudt Hilmen (1851-1883), a homesteader near Lennox, Dakota Territory, until he was killed by lightning in 1883, a few years after he claimed his homestead. I would like to find when he came to the US and, if possible, any passenger list information. In the 1865 census for Nordre Aurdal, he is listed as the oldest son of Iver Knuds. and Marit Olsd. (He is listed as 16 years old, slightly at odds with his accepted 1851 birth date.) His parents, Iver and Marit, and two of his siblings are on the 1877 passenger list for emigrants from Oslo (Ship: Angelo, Digitalarkivet, May 25, No. 412A and No. 412B); his parents are registered under the names of Iver Knudsen Hilmen and Marit Knudsen Hilmen, but he is not with them. One family account says that he accompanied his cousin (and future wife) Ragnhild Julsen and her sister Marit Julsen, who left Oslo on June 3, 1881 (Ship: Angelo, Digitalarkivet, No. 5008A and 5008B), but I can find no evidence of his name here or anywhere between 1865 and 1883. Any help on this Valdres immigrant would be appreciated.

oghillMany thanks for the reference, P. Hopkins. I thought I had searched this site for all the possibilities, but I certainly missed what you were able to find quickly.

Jo Anne SadlerThe Angelo and Hero were feeder ships that took passengers to Hull, England and then by rail to Liverpool or Glascow to get their ships to North America. From the Index of Departures on this site: http://www.norwayheritage.com/p_route.asp?ro=W07 On the Digitalarkivet link, the line is indicated as O. Swenson, who was the agent for the National Line in Kristiania. Their route was via Hull to Liverpool to New York.
oghillThank you, Ms. Sadler. Your information eliminates the Quebec destination, which my paternal grandfather reached on a direct route from Bergen to Quebec, on a small ship called the Iris.
BorgeIt might rule it out, but there is something odd about the departure of the S/S France of the National Line from Liverpool on May 23rd, which is a confirmed connection for emigrants departing on the S/S Hero from Christiania May 17th. As Jo Anne pointed out, O Swenson was the agent of the National Line, and their ships ran to New York, however, the S/S France was on a charter for the Allan Line on her May 23rd departure, and ran to Quebec where she arrived on June 4th. Our list of departures might not be complete so there could have been another National Line ship departing from Liverpool to New York, but I would check both possibilities, as there could have been both National Line and Allan Line passengers on the S/S France to Quebec on June 4th.
oghillThank you, Mr. Solem, for the qualifier. I must say that, as the new kid on board, I am getting expert information. This is a great forum site.
kaare nJust a question Are you sure you trace the right Knut,Knudt Hilman? Here are one Knud Olsen living on Hilmen farm in 1865? http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste.aspx?ft=1865&knr=0542&kenr=006&bnr=0060&lnr=000 But born 1836 One more born 1851 http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste.aspx?ft=1865&knr=0542&kenr=005&bnr=0019&lnr=000 Kåre
oghillThank you for your response, n. Kaare. I am in fact sure that I have the right Knud Hilmen insofar as the family structure matches exactly with the family history that we know from my maternal grandmother's side. But it is very interesting that the second reference you cited actually involves my maternal grandfather's family whose farm name was Hovrud, the name that my grandfather used when he came to this country in 1900. Johan Iversen, eldest son on the survey, was my great grandfather. (We have long family lines.) It is just coincidence that Johan's younger brother, Knud Iversen Hovrud, should have the same name and the same birth year as my great-grandfather Knudt Iversen Hilmen.
