need help finding PAULSEN
MNNOR	New to forum.. hope I can get help on finding my great great grandfather. I have tracked my family back to his arrival in the US in 1853. His name in all the records in America is George ( or Geo ) Paulson. ( or Paulsen ). He came from Norway, first mention of him is in Decateur WI in 1860. His birth year is listed as Feb 1835. Cannot find anything close in passenger lists. Don't know where in Norway... Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated !!!
Borge	There is a George Paulsen listed by Ulvestad in the Civil War soldier index. However, it might not be the right person, as this George Paulsen was listed as living in New Mexico. [?]
MNNOR	Thank you for your reply!![:)] It is not the correct Paulsen.. I found his civil war draft registration, with him living in Moscow, WI.
hasto	Is he Geo Paulsen (45) in Burns, La Crosse, Wn, in [url="http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=wisc1880&gardpostnr=44834&merk=44834#ovre"]1880 census[/url] ? It looks like the boys George (20) and Robert (17) were born in Norway. Perhaps the census is wrong about that.
MNNOR	I'm definately new.. I should expand on my question.. I have traced George from 1860 through every census.. 1930. I've traced his marriage to Margaret ( don't know maiden name ), to their 4 children: Henry, Albert ( my great grandfather ), Carl & Edward, their descendants, etc.. I just cannot locate any information on him BEFORE 1860. I do know he was born in Norway, Feb 1835, and arrived in the US in 1853. I was hoping to find out his passage here, or any information in Norway. ( birth, family members etc.. ) I've just now hit my roadblock on my knowlege of where to look .. Thank you so much for responding !!! This journey was all for a 60th birthday present for my mother !!
Brining	Hi This is circumstancial but a possibility. In the Vesterheim "Norwegians in the Civil War" database there is PAULSON, Kittel WI 37th Inf Co C. Residence: Moscow Township, Iowa County, Wisconsin. Born “Kittel Paulsen Tvedten” on 14 Oct 1831 in Nissedal, Telemark, Norway, son of Paul Kittilsen Århus and Hæge Gundersdatter. Came to the US in 1853. On 25 Mar 1856, he married Gro Olsdatter Breiehagen, widow of Ole Sandersen Øyo. Civil War: Farmer. Age 32. Blue eyes, light hair, light complexion, 6’. [url="http://vesterheim.org/CivilWar/db/p/pau/008463.html"]Click Here[/url] In the 1870 census Kittel Paulson, Paul Kittelson, and George Paulson are all on the same page and it would appear that Paul and Hæge are living with George. MNNOR	Thank you for your efforts !! I do agree the 1860 census is probably his parents and siblings. In the 1880 census, just as the 1870 census, it shows PAUL KITTELSON & HAEGE KITTELSON living with George... but it says they are something other than a direct relationship. After reading above I have put one thing together. -- KITTEL PAULSEN is married to GRO... who was a widow of Ole Sanderson... well , in 1870 I have put together that GEORGE's wife MARGARET had a sister named Sarah who married a Sanderson. In 1870 they ( Sarah & Lewis Sanderson ) too lived next door to Kittel Paulsen & George Paulsen. So I'm assuming that PAUL KITTELSON & HAEGE were living with GEORGE & MARGARET because HAEGE was MARGARET'S sister Sarah's mother-in-law...?? I think the information on Kittel Paulsen arriving in 1853 is another family I can use to find any passage records for George.. or birth records.. Thanks again for the new avenue to investigate!
Brining	Haege is 60 years old so more likely to be their mother than sister Carla
DALB	This family emigrating in 1853 from Nissedal, Telemark could be one to check out. The parents married in 1829, no age given for the mother. The son Gunnar could be George in the USA. MNNOR	I thank you DALB !! There is great possibility in this being my family. I am ordering this fiche from LDS. I know there are no complete passenger records yet for 1853 available online.. except this wonderful site.. Does anyone know how & where I might find these off site??... I'm assuming passage was through Canada.
Borge	The Canadians did not begin the archiving of passenger lists before in 1865 (for the port of Quebec). Norwegian records of emigrants did not start before in 1867. This means that for the majority of Norwegian emigrants leaving in the period between 1853 and 1865, there are no surviving passenger lists. Only a very small number of Norwegians traveled via New York during this period. There are still some passenger lists of Norwegian ships arriving New York in 1853, that has not been transcribed for our database. You may get microfilmed lists from 1853 via LDS or NARA. If you find any of those lists not yet transcribed we would be very happy for a copy [:p]
