Parish Records Translation Help
edrIn microfilms of parish records from the 1810's through 1830's (for Løten in Hedmark), the marriages section usually has an "occupation" listed before the groom's name. And almost without fail there is a short word before each bride's name, and it's the same word for each bride. With my limited Norwegian vocabulary and difficulty reading the old script, I cannot tell what this "bride's title" word is. It looks to me like it might be something like "Pigan" or "Rigan". Can someone explain this word?
edrI think I just answered my own question. There is a word list on the "Ancestors from Norway" web site that has "pige" as an archaic form of "girl". Nowadays it's spelled "pike". So would "Pigen" used as a title be something like "the girl" or "Miss"?
