Ellis registered for the World War I draft in 1918 under the name Ellis Iverson Lundberg, born Mary 8, 1885. Nearest relative was Benjamin Lundberg, Camp Dodge, Iowa. Camp Dodge at that time was a very large World War I Army training camp so Benjamin most likely was in the Army and this was probably not his actual residence. |
| kroken | I think the chance of Ellis being Elias is slim. I am particularly disturbed by the middle-name Iverson. If it was Evensen, I would have been more certain. However, he had another brother in the US. His native Norwegian Name was Bernt Evensen Lundberg. Bernt could easily have been americanised into Benjamin. |

The 1920 US census shows a Ben Lundberg, 32 yrs old, born in Norway, immigrated 1910, living in Lake County, Minnesota. Single and works as a laborer in a logging camp.
BUT there is also a Ben Evensen, 34 yrs old, born in Norway, immigrated 1908?, living in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. Married with 3 children, works as a salesman in a retail coffee company.
While I was looking at Evenson/Evensen Norway born entries in the index - I also noted in the 1920 US census an E. Evensen, 35 yrs old, born in Norway, immigrated (I can't read the year), living in San Francisco, California. Married with 4 children and a very young niece with surname Paulsen in the household. I also am unable to read his occupation.
(No Norway born Elias Evenson or Evensen in this index for 1920.)
Never be surprised at how drastically names can be altered or even just be mispelled on some documents in the US. Keep an open mind and keep notes of all the possibilities. |
