Looking for Andriasen family |
9245 | I'm looking for my great-grandparents Anton and Christina
Andriasen. They emigrated to Hoboken NJ and had two children
Andrew (b 1897 d 1956) Josephine (dates unknown). Anton
was in US Navy and served in Spanish-American War. I do
not know his birth or death dates. I believe they may have come
from Norderhov.

Hopkins | You've located them in US censuses? US military records? Those would help you determine birth years and immigration years.
There appear some Norwegian born persons listed with surname spelled as 'Anderson' in several Hoboken area federal censuses. |
Jo Anne Sadler | What name did Andrew go by in the U.S. Anderson?
In the June 6, 1900 census for Hoboken, Hudson County, NJ:
Anton Andersson, born Norway August 1874, immigration 1896, carpenter, married 3 months
Christiane, born Norway June 1876, immigrated 1897 Theodore, born Norway May 1882, immigrated 1892, carpenter
If you believe there is a chance they came from Norderhov, you can rent the microfilm church records at a local Family History Center:

9245 | My grandparents had always gone by Andriasen and are listed as such in ss.death index. My mother's maiden name same.I've noticed in looking at ship's list there is lots of room
for error.
Thanks for tip on Hoboken census. I will check it out. Anton is
buried in Fairview Cemetary using Andriasen with no
birth or death date. I think the birth date of 1874 would be about right.quote: Originally posted by Jo Anne Sadler

9245 | I've found only ss death list for my grandparents. No info at all
on Anton. The only info I have is what is on his grave. No dates
just that he served in Span-Amer. War. I have spent a lot of time
looking for the proper records, and have found that it is necessary to join one society or another to gain access to records. Is there a way around this?quote: Originally posted by Hopkins

Hopkins | For the military record I would think that an excellent resource would be the US National Archives.
The Latter-Day Saints have an excellent Research Guide about that topic that they have made available for study online. I cannot capture the exact URl for you here - but start at their home webpage and look for the Research Guide entitled "U.S. Military Records" which you will find somewhere under the tab heading labelled "Research Guidance".
LDS FamilySearch homepage - http://www.familysearch.org/
Click on the tab "Search" and a series of additional tabs will appear just below those.

Hopkins | You will also find Anton, Christina and daughter Josephine in the 1920 US census in Hoboken, New Jersey. Anton's age is listed about 10 years older than you would expect after looking at the 1900 census - but people make mistakes (especially with the census)... WHICH was correct? We can't tell. My version of that census index has listed there surname as Anderson but the actual handwritten page looks a bit more like Andrison. I can't be sure in the image available to me but I think the immigration years look like 1884 or 1885.

Jo Anne Sadler | I personally think there is a great benefit to joining different societies and the small fees they charge are well worth it, they do have expenses. Norway Heritage is supported by donations. Not everything is free and on the Internet.[:)]
If you know where Anton is buried, you can request his cemetery records if the cemetery is still active. They do charge a fee for this.
What about Andrew's baptism/confirmation records? Have you obtained your grandparents SS application, it is money well spent. It lists the birthplace of parents and other information you may not know. |
9245 | Thanks for your input. I don't have a problem paying fees for
records. I'm just not sure I want to be locked into a membership. I've heard some negatives from people who have used them. quote: Originally posted by Jo Anne Sadler

9245 | Thank you very much for the info--it helps quite a bit. Although
I have never seen any other spelling in family records, I suspect
that you are correct in that it may have been different. I guess part of the fun is solving the puzzle.quote: Originally posted by Hopkins
