Elverum Bygdebok - Information Exchange?
tstjohnI own a copy of the Elverum Bygdebok by Havard Skirbekk, Bind 1. Unfortunately, I think my family will be found in the Elverum Bygdebok by Havard Skirbekk, Bind2. My family name is Bruun and the farm I am looking for is Taerningen. I would be happy to exchange information and am hoping someone has access to Bind 2. My earliest relative is Christian Pedersen Bruun, born 1788 Norway, died 22 Feb 1849 on Terningen Farm, Hedmark Norway. He married Siri Olsdatter (Vinger?) 29 Oct 1824 in Hedmark. Siri was born 23 Dec 1799 in Hedmark and died 20 Nov 1889 on Terningen Farm, Hedmark. I know of 4 children. Peder Bruun born 9 June 1825, Hedmark. Oluf Bruun born 3 Apr 1828 married Inger Margaret (Rikardsdr) Heggelund. Berthe Kristensdatter Bruun, born 12 Feb 1838 Elverum, married Severin Knudsen 21 Oct 1864 in Elverum. She died 15 Sep 1912 Hedmark. And, my great grandfather, Christian Severin Bruun born 17 Oct 1844 Elverum, Died Apr 1930 Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He immigrated about 1860 but I can find no information about that. Any help or exchanges out there for me...I hope! tstjohn
Jo Anne SadlerThis organization may be able to help you: http://www.nhohlag.org/
tstjohnThanks - I have looked at that site in my travels on the web, but all copies are far away from Tennessee!
Jo Anne SadlerTheir annual Stevne is in Eau Claire, WI this August and they would have their books there. Generally, when one joins a Lag, they will do genealogical research for you. This Lag charges $10.00 per year, as a memeber, you could put a query in the newsletter. http://www.nhohlag.org/06stevnemain.htm
tstjohnThanks for that specific information. It is definitely an organization I will join. Who knows, someone may need the information I have in my Bind 1! BTW - help me out with my non-existent Norewgian please. What do the words "Stevne" and "Lag" mean?
DALBI did not find the birth of Christian Bruun, but Siri Olsdatter is definitely from Elverum. You may have some of this data, but this is what I found. I believe this is her lineage. You should check the LDS parish films to verify data. Jo Anne SadlerIn Einar Haugens dictionary: Stevne - convention, meeting or rally Bygedelag - association of people who came from the same district - lag is an abbreviation Here is a good dictionary for reading the old records and tips on typing the Norwegian characters: http://home.online.no/~otjoerge/files/word.htm

I have Bind 2. Terninga was not so much a farm as it was a tannery. In short, this is what is in the book: Christian Pedersen Bruun (from Vestfold) studied tannery together with Jon Skaug in Oslo. Skaug then ran the tannery in Elverum and when he died, Bruun took over. Christian Brunn married Siri Olsdatter Skjærbakken and she was the one who ran the farm while Christian ran the tannery. Christian died young. The tannery was then run by their son Oluf Bruun. In 1867, Siri (67 years old) is listed as the owner. At the tannery, Oluf is 33 years old and unmarried with an assistant, Teodor Sørmerud (23 years old). Also living there was a servant girl Gurine Andersdatter (25 years old). The son Per (41 years old) was living at home but worked on the roads. Both Per and Teodor emigrated to the US in 1868. In 1875, Oluf was married to Inger Heggelund from Løten and they had sons, Christian (born 1867) and Adolf (born 1874). Siri (born 1799), had a granddaughter, Oliane Knutsdatter living with her. Working in the tannery were Ola Helset from Åmot and Syver Dal from Vang. None of the sons wanted to be tanners. Christian was interested in business and went to the US. Adolf was a veternarian in Stange. The farm and tannery were sold by Oluf Brunn Terninga in 1892.
tstjohnThank you very much for the information. In the meantime, I have made two excellent contacts, one in Norway, the other in Denmark. The two correspondants have given me a great deal of detailed information as well as pictures of Terningen and the area. I have also become the pleased owner of a Bind2 sKirrbeck. So, I am making wonderful progress with my Norwegian family. tsj
