Surching Alette Berg
livmaritmy family tries to find out what happened to Alette Berg, my greatgrandmother. We know that she emigrated to Amerika in 1903, and that is the last we know. She was born in Selje Norway 13.nov 1873 or 2. She came to Ellis Island 4. feb 1903, at least we bellieve this is her, 90% sure. She was going to Lake Mills, Winnebago, to a cousin Sivert Anderson. We also have a letter from her sent from Idaho in 1904. This is all we know- maybe someone have a clue- we really want to find out what happened to her. Liv Marit
Jo Anne SadlerOn the Ellis Island database In 1903, Alethe Berg, age 26 (1877) is going to a brother in law, S.B. Horby, in Lake Mills, Winnebago. The destinations kind of run together. There is also: Alette Berg, 29, (1873) dressmaker, single, arriving June 17, 1902 on the Oscar II from Christiania. Ticket paid herself, destination Lutheran Pilgrim House. Here she is leaving from Christiania, indicating she is married from Trygstad: click here To try and find her more information would be helpful, other names she used, was she married or single, father's name, did other family members immigrate?
HopkinsThe little town of Lake Mills is in Center township, Winnebago County, Iowa. If Sivert Anderson or S.B. Horby was a cousin or a brother-in-law - do you know his age and what his wife's name was? When did he arrive in the US?
livmaritI don't know when her brother in law went to america, but I can try to find out. I don't know his birth date either. Thank yoou for helping!
livmariti know her father's name: Bersvend Jonssønn/Jonsson. We also know that she was unmarried when she left Norway. We are quite sure she left in jan. 1903 , because she had a son in aug.1902
Jo Anne SadlerFinding more information on her and her family in Norway could help find her in America. Where did the name Berg come from? She could have gone by Bervsendsdatter or something like that. Where was the son born in 1902, finding her in the 1900 census could yield clues. Digitalarkivet has several databases for Selji, I could not find her there. It does not mean she is not there, I just could not find anything: click here
Jo Anne SadlerThis appears to be her in the 1900 census for Kristiania, born in Selji on November 3, 1878 which makes your Alethe born in 1877 more correct: click here
BriningOn the Ellis Island Manifest Alethe is going to her cousin Sivert Anderson. S B Horby is for the person on the next line. It is hard to follow the lines across [;)] Carla
BriningThere is one Aletta Johanne Bersvendd in the Døypte Sogn og Fjordane database Click Here born Nov 13 1872. Carla
livmaritThe name Berg coms from" Bersvendsdatter". It was common tha the last name was ......son or ......datter after the fathers first name. But these names went over to be Berg or Jonson. We are sure that our Alette is the one born in Selje, but it all stops when she comes to America. Her son born in 1902 was put in a fosterhome in Oslo, just after the birth. We haven't found his destiny either. We know the family left for Fredrikstad, and was called Andresen. The boys name was Kristian Smith. Thank you for helping.
