Ship "calamania" or "Oscar II"
stevej	My Grandfathers naturalization papers state that he left Christiania April 20,1906 aboard the "Calamania". I have not been able to find a ship of that name listed anywhere.I did find that the S.S.Oscar II left the same port on the same day,and arrived at the port of New York on May 2,1906 which is one day different than the records I have,May 1,1906.Any ideas? I would also like to find pass. lists for the correct ship.Thanks
Sue	Steve, I believe your ship is the Cunard Line CARMANIA which arrived at New York, NY 1906-05-02. Grandfather would have been a transmigrant, and sailed from Christiania on the Wilson Line ship SALMO which (according to the SS&A) departed Christiania April 20th 1906. You should be able to confirm this by checking online at the Digitalarkivet Beginning with the Digitalarkivet http://www.hist.uib.no/arkivverket/index-en.htm First click - source categories .. next click - emigrants .. next click - registers ... you will then see a list of ports/dates listed on the right .. stevej	Dear Sue, Thankyou for the reply and info., Askeroi in Norway sent me some info. relating to another posting,"Grandfather Elias",that has kind of sent me in another direction.I was able to back track on some of what he found, and according to oral family history,most of it checks out.It appears that there was a name change from Kristiansen, to Johannesen, to Johnson.And that Elias and his brother may have came over on the ship "Romeo". The problem that I have run into now is that I can not find any records of their arrival in New York. Was the "Romeo" a ship through Hull? If so, how do I find the connecting ship to New York? Sue	Steve, I had a look on the digitalarkivet and saw Elias and Johannes listed as sailing on ROMEO. I hadn't noticed before, but it did sail the same day as SALMO. Yes, ROMEO was also a Wilson Line "feeder ship" which sailed to Hull. Check that ship right here on the SS&A and read about Wilson Line and Romeo, and the article about transmigration through Hull. I experimented on the Ellis Island db now that I know their names. I found arriving at NY on Carmania May 2nd 1906, Johannes Krisiansen age 28 (note transcription spelling error)from Hidemarken (another error). I hadn't been able to find Elias in the index, but there he is, listed right above Johannes. They are going to brother Alfred Johansen at Menomonie, WI. They have made corrections on the manifest, to both of Elias' names, so goodness knows how they have him listed .. maybe with an "O." Go again to the Ellis Island site, and search on Johannes by just placing J for first name and Kris for last name, select male, select 1906-1906 and age 28-28 and Carmania for ship and you will find them.
