Elinus Andreassen (?)
NowaliElinus Andreassen was born in 1880. He was my father’s uncle. I know he went to America after 1900. In 1900 he lived in Kristiansund, Norway. I also know that he lived in Minneapolis after he had arrived in America. But I don’t know anything else; I’ve been trying to search around the net, but no luck. Anybody who knows something about this man or his relatives? Any information is awfully appreciated!
jwiborgHello Caroline, Baker Elenius Dorteus Andreas. Lundring from Nærø, emigrated from Trondheim to Inwood, Iowa on May 30th, 1906. Ticket paid in America. Wanted occupation: In Bakery. Elinus is also registered at Ellis Island, New York, in 1915. He has been home in Norway for a visit. Elinus Andresen (35y, born 1880), with residence Woodwille, Wisconsin, arrived at Ellis Island on June 3rd, 1915. Widower and carpenter Elinus Andresen sailed with the ship SS Bergensjord, leaving Bergen Norway on May 26th, 1915. Emigration link His son Gotred Andresen (=Gotfred/Godfred) born Nov 29th, 1906 in Minneapolis Minnesota is listed together with him. The manifest states that Elinus was naturalized at the US Circuit Court in Winnebago, Illinois on January 14th, 1913. Address in the US reads Woodwille, Wisc from the Ellis Island manifest, while the Bergen emigrant list states destination as Minneapolis, Minn. Here he is in Kristiansund in census 1900: Census link Jan Peter
BriningIn the 1910 census ANDRESEN ELENUS 30 M W NORW IL WINNEBAGO 5-WD ROCKFORD He is listed as a widower and is a boarder. I don't see his son listed with him. Carla
BriningIn the Minnesota Birth certificate Index Click Here there is Anderson, Babe Date of Birth: 11/29/1906 County of Birth: Hennepin certid# 1906-32473 Mother Maiden Name: Sophia This could be Gotred. When the child hadn't been named they used "Babe" The mother's maiden name is probably her given name. The time frame from the time Elinus left Norway in May to Gotred's birth in November would indicate that Sophia was someone he knew in Norway. Carla
jwiborgNice work, Carla! This is a wild shot, but what about this one? Emigration from Trondheim 13-JUN-1906: Marta Sofie Hans. umarried servant, born 1885 Herø, going to Granitte Falls, Minnesota. Ticket paid in America. (By Elinus? [:)]) Jan Peter
NowaliThank you both so much! I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your help! My family has been looking for Elinus and his son for a long time. We really hope that we, in time, can find some reliving relatives “over there”. Again, thank you both, if anybody finds more information; please post it! I’m not very good at finding this kind of information, but I’m learning. But just a question, if this Marta Sofie is the person that married (?) Elinus, and she’s from Herø, does that mean that she’s from the place Herøy, in Nordland?
jwiborgHi, oops, sorry! I've been mixing Nerøy and Herøy here.... I thought for a second that this Marta Sofie was from the same place as Elinus, but I see now that I was wrong.... [:I] So then I think we can forget this young servant from Nerøy... Jan Peter
NowaliBTW: "The manifest states that Elinus was naturalized at the US Circuit Court in Winnebago, Illinois on January 14th, 1913." What does this mean? If you can, please explain in Norwegian. Thank you!
BriningYou could try contacting the St Croix Historical Society to see if they have any information. Woodville Wisconsin is in St Croix County. Click Here Also I noticed on the 1915 emigration record that there is a Benny Andresen listed above Elinus. Is he a relative? In the Elis Island record it says he is going to his Aunt Constance Te?rney in Woodville Wisconsin. Carla
jwiborgEnglish: The manifest states that Elinus was naturalized at the US Circuit Court in Winnebago, Illinois on January 14th, 1913. Norwegian: På Ellis Island dokumentet som viser Elinus' ankomst til New York den 3. juni 1915, så står det at han fikk amerikansk statsborgerskap ("was naturalized") i en rettssal ("US circuit court") i Winnebago county, Illinois, 14. januar 1913. Ellis Island manifestet kan du selv søke opp her. I 1915 er de registrert som Elinus og Godfred Andresen. Jan Peter
Norway2WisconsinCaroline, I have enjoyed reading what you & others have written here. It is interesting & fun to learn about our own ancestors story and so many others both here in America and back in Norway. I took a special interest in the fact that Woodville Wisconsin was listed in your information. That is the town where some of my ancestors settled, helped to develop, and are buried. The neighboring town of Baldwin is where my own Andreassen Ancestors settled & are buried. I will check my records to see what I can find & I will check the local records there when I visit again. Good luck & Happy Research!! Miles
NowaliYes, it's very fun and interesting to learn about out ancestors. Let me know what you find! And thank you :)
