Peter Lassesen Vestnys
bookloverMy great-great grandfather came to California from Norway in the 1850s. He was born in 1835 in More & Romsdal province. I believe the town, village, was called Vest Nes. His father was Lasse Pedersen. After marrying in Calif and raising 11 children he returned to Norway. Any help would be appreciated.[:)]
jwiborgHi Nora, here is Peters christening record: click here Peter Birth: 02 JUL 1835 Christening: 05 JUL 1835 Place: Vestnes, Møre og Romsdal, Norway Parents: Lasse Pedersen & Synneve Arnesdr His parent's marriage record: link Lasse Pederssen & Synneve Arnesdr Marriage: 21 JUN 1812 Place: Veøy, Møre Og Romsdal, Norway Here is widow Synneve Arnesdatter (79) living on the farm Vestnæs/Vestnes in Vestnes muncipality in census 1865: click here Peder Lassesen (45) and Andrina Lassesdatter (36) are Peters siblings. Lasse Justsen & Beret Olsdatter are Andrinas childen with two different men, Just & Ole. Peter's niece Beret Olsdatter (Andrinas daughter) is living on the farm Vestneshagen in census 1900. This farm is prob. close to the Vestnes farm, and should be in the same area as where Peter went back to, after his American journey. link I could not locate Peter in the 1900 census for Vestnes. Do you happen to know when he went back home to Norway? Jan Peter
BriningHi He is in the 1880 census Peter VESTUYS living in Nortonville, Contra Costa, California, listed as divorced with 6 of the children living with him. Click Here so he had to have gone back after that. Carla
Jo Anne SadlerHere is some information and really nice pictures of Vestnes: click here And a look up volunteer for the Vestnes farm books: look up
bookloverJo Anne, I'm not familiar with the farm books. Are they like censuses? What sort of information do they contain? The pictures are beautiful. Nora.
Jo Anne SadlerThey are local history books. Here is a good site for researching records in Norway and includes "Bygdebøker" information: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/
BriningHi Nora, I am pretty sure that Peter's wife's name was Mary Sadler. In the 1910 & 1920 census there are several Vestnys, one named Wilbert born about 1879/1880. In the California death records at Rootsweb Click Here there is a Wilbert Vestnys who lists his mother's maiden name as Sadler. In the 1880 census for Nortonville, Contra Costa, California there is a Mary Saddler, divorced. Click Here she is listed as being born in Carolina. This is all circumstancial but seems to fit. There is also a land record for Peter on Rootsweb Name: PETER VESTNYS Date: 01 Jul 1875 Location: CA, Contra Costa Document #: 73121 Serial #: CACAAA 031762 Sale Type: Military Scrip Warrant Patent Meridian or Watershed: MD Parcel: Township 001N, Range 001E, Section 8 Sale type would indicate that Peter was in the Civil War and so possibly in Carolina. Carla
BriningHi I may have found them in the 1870 census in Martinez California. He is listed as Peter Warner but it is hard to read the last name on the actual census. Age looks like 32 but could be 35. born in Norway Wife Mary age 23 can't read where she was born Daughter Mary age 7 Daughter Kate (Petrine??) age 5 Son Peter age 3 all of the children were born in California Carla
BriningHi Ancestry has a marriage record for a Peter Vestnys to a Mary Francis Saddler, I don't have a subscription so can't look at the details. In the Black Diamond, WA Cemetery (King CountY) there is Vestnys, Mary Frances, wife of Peter L. born 5/7/1847 died 10/21/1894 Click Here Did they re marry ?? Also Black Diamond had its roots in Contra Costa, Here is some history on it Click Here The son Peter was in Whatcom county, Washington in the 1910 census. It is interesting that I haven't found a trace of any Vestnys in the 1900 census. Carla
