Tevik family in MN
JodiHI! I realy need help getting information on my Great grandparents. Their names are Jonas and Anna Tevik. They came over from Norway around 1900. They had a little boy named Hilmer and Anna was pregnat on the ship. I know that while in Minnesota, they lived in Staples. They had more children here. I can't seem to find any information about them regarding the ship they were on or how to get informantion in Norway about them. I would be so happy with any help on this matter. Thank you!!!! Jodi
HopkinsThere is only one close match in the 1910 US census - a Jonas and Annie 'Tevak' in Cass County, Minnesota. Listed with 4 children surviving (of 5 total born) Halmar, Helen, Andrew and Margarite - the oldest son listed as born in Norway all the younger born in Minnesota. Jonas is listed as 30 years old, Annie as 32 years old and the three members of the family from Norway are all listed as immigrating to the US in 1903. There is also a 'brother' in household listed as 28 years old Elias Tevak. In the 1920 US census the family is listed as 'Tenik' or 'Tenick', Jonas is a 40 year old widower with children Helmer, Helen, Andrew, Margarite, Emma, Daniel, Alma and Albert still living in Cass Co., Minnesota. Jonas lists that he immigrated to the US in 1903 and became a naturalized US citizen in 1909. (I have no idea where a location like 'Staples' is in Minnesota, have never heard of it.) Do you have information about where in Norway they may have come from?
JodiThanks so much for the information! The town of Staples is up north in Cass County. I believe that they lived in or near Kristiansund Norway. I know that Jonas had Brother Peder and a sister Anna that stayed in Norway. He also had a brother named Albert that came to America and went back to Norway. I hope this helps! Thanks again for responding so fast for me!! Jodi
HopkinsKristiansund is in Møre og Romsdal, Norway, on the west coast. There is a database for quite a number of emigrants leaving from the port of Kristiansund on the Digitalarkivet website - Jonas reveals much more about himself in that database - http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=EMIKRUT&gardpostnr=8040&sokefelt=skjul (That database does not list the name of the ship - but it would probably be a ship that took them to England to board a larger trans-Atlantic ship.) With the reveal of his patronymic name and your information about location within Norway - he was easy to find in the 1900 Norwegian census - http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1900&knr=1569&kenr=001&bnr=0069&lnr=00
JodiThanks so much! I found out alot of interesting information! I like it because some of the information is in English. The farm that they lived on has a different name then theirs. I wonder if it was owned by someone else or, if the name is more of my family. Thanks again!! You were alot of help![:)] Jodi
