NancyC | By coincidence, Elen Olsdotter Hjelanes is the sister of Ragnhild Olsdotter Hjelanes, who was the subject of my recent posting , click here. You will find information on her family at the Digital Archive (see link at end of message). I am pretty certain that Elen Olsdotter is found in the list of emigrants from Aure in 1881 in the bygdbok, Den nye dagen gryr. Bygdebok for Aure 1800-1900., on p. 775. She is number 35 and listed as Elen Olsdotter Bakk, also known as Gjelen (Hjelanes). She is listed as unmarried, employed as a maid. She is 20 years old and her destination is Rushford, Minnesota. She is apparently traveling with a party from Stemshaug in Aure: Marit Stemshaug (28 years old), her daughter Elen (10), and Johannes S. Stemshaug (25). The three young people are listed as unmarried. Sivert is a common name in Aure, but there is only one man named Sivert in this list: her sister Ragnhild's husband. Perhaps someone else will be able to help you find the father of Elen's child. I have sent your information to a man in Aure who is related to this family. If he has any information, I will pass it on at a later date.
