Nyhus family from Gjovik
Sher5564I need help with finding my ancestors from Gjovk, Norway. I have some information, but need to fill in some missing names and dates. My great-grandfather was Hans Nyhus and my great-grandmother was Marte Johannesdatter. In Norway I think Hans was listed as Hans Nielson. His father was Niels Olson. They lived on the Nyhus farm. As far as I know, there were five children: Ole, Johanna, Hans, Oleanna and Helene. Hans's brother Ole (Nielson) Nyhus immigrated first to the United States and then Hans came in about 1880. Marte and the children came in 1884. They had six children born in Norway and eight children born in the United States. Two of the children died in Norway, how would I find records of their death and I wanted to find out the ship they sailed on and more of the records in Norway. I have tried some of the web sites for Norway, but I can't get anywhere and I get frusrated. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Sue
HopkinsYou have no idea of the birth years of each of the persons you seek? Without that information trying to help you at all is nearly impossible. You know where they settled in the US? The names and ages of the children born in Norway? The family in 1865 Norwegian census? - http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1865&knr=0527&kenr=005&bnr=0079&lnr=000
Sher5564Thank you for sending the web page for the census for the Nyhus family. I do not see Johanne listed with them. Yes, I do have the dates for the birth years of some of the people I am seeking, I didn't know how much space I was allowed when sending in a message. My family is as follows: Ole Pedersen b.abt 1795 at ??and his wife Kari Nielsdatter b.abt 1788. I do not have anything on them previous to this as to where they were born.(So this is where I need some help.)They had two children as far as I know (another area I need to check on): Nils Olsen b.1819 and Marte Marie Olsdatter b. 1821. Niels or Nils married Kari Hansdatter b. 1818. Nils and Kari had five children: 1.Ole b. 1840, 2. Johanne b. 1842, 3. Helene b. 1845, 4. Hans b. 1850, 5. Oleanna b. 1859 (I don't know if there were any more children born to Nils and Kari between Hans and Oleanna.) Ole and Hans came to the United States. Ole came first and then Hans. Ole never married . Hans married Marte Johannesdatter b.1877. ( her father and mother were Johannes Hansen b. 1832 at Vardal and Mathea Hansdatter b. 1853 at Vardal) Marte came to the U.S.with the childen in 1884. Hans and Marte (Martha) were my gr.grandparents. They had 6 children born in Norway. 1.Hjalmer Hansen b. 1873 and died 1877 in Norway, 2. Inga b.1874, 3.Clara b. 1874, 4.Nels b.1879, 5. Maurits b. 1881 and died in Norway???I don't have any date here) 6. Hendrick b. 1883. The four children came to the U.S. Hendrick was my grandfather. They had a big family in the United States and I have much of the information for that, I have tried to go back one more generation from Ole Pederson, but cannot find the right Ole Peterson. I also would like to see records for the two children who died in Norway, the ship name and where they departed from. Sue
HopkinsSomething is very wrong - Marte Johannesdatter cannot be born 1877, have a child in 1873, then have four or five more children and leave Norway in 1884. Where did the 'Nyhus' family settle in the US? How many US censuses give information about the family members that matches the information you've collected? Have you studied the parish records for Vardal/Gjøvik area? You can order and use them at your nearest LDS Family History Center.
BriningThere are a lot of the church records for Vardal and Vestre Toten on line. Click Here Niels was born in Vestre Toten (the census is wrong [:0] ) Here is a link to a Norwegian American Dictionary Click Here which will help. To find Niels birth record, click on Toten 1695-1825 under Døpte then Toten 1817-20 Rolle = Far Fornavn Ole Eternavn Pe (not typing in the full name will give you all names that start with Pe, helpful when the spellings don't always remain the same.) Click on Søk and when the list comes up Click on Make Fornavn which will sort in order of the Mothers names. There are several Kari's listed, Clicking on the underlined number will bring up the full record. Niels is # 1623 and a son Peder is # 988. To search for a child's name Rolle would = barn, fill in the fornavn and far (father) fornavn fields For records for Vardal Click Here and click on kirkebøker. Hopefully this gives you enough information to search through the records, if not ask questions. [:)] Carla
Sher5564I am sorry I have the birth date wrong for Marte Johannesdatter. I tried to make sure I had the right dates before I sent the message. I might have inadvertedly put in the wedding year instead of birth year. Marte and Hans were married after they had two children. I will check again. The Nyhus family I am searching for settled in Fosston, Minnesota. I have most of the information after they were in Fosston, I am still researching that also.I don't know what port they came into the United States or if Ole or Hans stopped anywhere previous to going to Fosston to find work or to check on land or any of the trip between getting off the ship and coming to Fosston. I have not studied the parish records for Vardal/Gjovik as I cannot seem to get on the website that I need to go. I did order at one time a microfilm from the LDS family History Center and tried to dechiper it, but I didn't have any luck. There are only two Microfilm readers there and I was allowed one hour each week night. I appreciate your help. Sue
Sher5564In reply to the second message from Brining: I did click on the -click here message Niels was born in Vestre Toten and I followed all the steps. I clicked Toten 1695-1825 under Dopte, then clicked onToten1817-20. It brought up a page with a wide line and a red x in the left corner. I could not get beyond this page. Is there anything I should have done to get to the page with information on Niels Olsen? I tried several times and still I was not getting anywhere. As you can see I need help. Part of my problem is knowing where to find things once I get on the website. Thank you for your help. Sue
Sher5564I looked at my family history and I found my mistake, I am sorry about that. Marte (Martha) Johannesdatter was born April 1, 1853 in Vardal. She and Hans were married February 4, 1877 in Vardal Church. Their children: Ole Nielsen b. 1840 in Vardal Johanne Nielsdatter b. 1842 in Ostre Toten Helene Nielsdatter b. 1845 in Ostre Toten Han Peter Nielsen b.1850 in Vardal Oleanna Nielsdatter b. 1859 in Vardal

Sher5564Hi, Thanks Carla for finding information on the birth, baptizm and marriage for me. It took me awhile to decipher the words and to figure out some things. I will have to try to see about getting java script on my computer, I just never knew about it. I was wondering if I have this figured out right for the record you sent: The baby that is mentioned in the baptism, is his name Peder? Would this be the first born child (born 1817) and Niels Olson woud be the second child (born 1819)? I typed out the record and I was wondering about a few things I have questions about. In the record does the initial stand for their middle name? This is the record for Peder: The Church is H.K.?? Atlongstad I wasn't sure about some of the Norwegian words what they meant even though I did find a dictionary online and was able to translate quite a few of the words. Thanks so much for helping me. Sue
torrustadSome of this names are familar to me; I'm living only some few miles away from Groseth. You have done a good translation; I'll add: HK= Koff Kirke = Hoff Church Forlover = best man ungk= unkar=bachelor M=mann= male K=kvinne=female Inderst=an old norwegian word for "lodger"; a person renting a room. As you probably know the naming traditions in Norway until about 1900 was "the patronymic" such as Ole's son became an "Olsen/Olson/; his daughter a "Olsdatter=Olsdaughter. (forgive me my broken English. If you need some help mail me at Tango Oscar dash Romeo Uniform at online.no)
Sher5564Tor, Thank you for the information and forgive my not knowing Norwegian words. So is Groseth a city or a farm name? I know somewhat of the Norwegian naming practice, but does Ole Peders GrosetBakken then become Ole Pederson? Previously I could not find the right Ole Pederson because the name was very common. I could not get any farther. Sue
BriningHi GrosetBakken/Groseth refers to the farm they lived on. It would change if they moved. In the marriage record Ole Peders. is living on the farm Ælton. On the main page of this site there is a link under Articles to "Hunting Passenger lists and Genealogy" there is an excellent article that explains Norwegian names there. Carla
Sher5564Thanks for writing. I was wondering, you mentioned in a previous message that the birth dates for Ole Pederson and Kari are not available on line, how does one access any records farther back? Also I did not know there was another son, the first born to Ole and Kari named Peder. I only had two children born to them; Niels and Marte Marie. Two of the six children born to my gr.grandparents, Hans and Marte Nyhus in Norway died there Their names were Hjalmer b. 1873-1877 and Maurits b.1881-??? In the death records is there any indication of what they died from? Sue
BriningHi The LDS has the parish records on microfilm which you can rent. They have locations all over Click Here Possibly Hjelmer's death record although it lists Peterson as his father's name. År: 1877 Kirke: Vardal, Gjøvik By Dødsdato: 06.09.1877 Begravet dato: 11.09.1877 Jordfestet dato: 16.09.1877 Fornavn: Hjalmar Farsnavn: Petersen Slektsnavn: Bosted: Yrke: Dagarbeiderbarn Sivilstand: Kjønn: M Alder: Født dato: ..1873 Fødested: Oppholdssted: Gjøvig and probably Maurits År: 1883 Kirke: Vardal, Hunn Sogn Dødsdato: 13.12.1883 Begravet dato: 21.12.1883 Jordfestet dato: 10.02.1884 Fornavn: Maurits Farsnavn: Hansen Slektsnavn: Nyhus Bosted: Øvreby Yrke: Drengebarn Sivilstand: Kjønn: M Alder: Født dato: 05.03.1881 Fødested: Gjøvik Oppholdssted: Dødsårsak: Skarlagensfeber Legebesøk: Ja Anmeldt: Ja Far/ektemann fornavn: Hans Far/ektemann farsnavn: Far/ektemann slektsnavn: Nyhus Far/ektemann yrke: Dagarbeider Far/ektemann familieforh: Far The birth records for Hjalmer May 1 1873, Inga Dec 24 1874, and Clara May 7 1877 are there. Hans & Marte are listed as unmarried (not that uncommon) They must have married between 1877 and 1879 since they are listed as married for Nils birth 1/27/1879, Maruits born March 5 1881 Henrik Jan 24 1883. Carla
torrustadHi; I got your email. If you tell me exactly what kind of info uou need I'll try to olook it up at our local Historical Society; maybe next Friday (2nd of March) I can do lookups at the Church Records for you.
Sher5564Hi, Thanks everyone for the help. Thanks, Carla for the birth dates for the Nyhus children and the death dates for Hjalmer and Maurits. The children's last name was probably listed as Hansen in Norway, except for Hjalmer which they listed as Petersen? I have the wedding date for Hans and Marte Nyhus as Feb. 4, 1877 in Vardal Church. I was wondering if there were records telling of why the two children died? Would this be a different record not the church record? I have been working on my family tree for awhile and have asked for help before, when it seemed I could not find out any more. I did find out that Marte lived with the two first children for a time at a poor peoples home. She was probably there as she was not married and her family could not support two more to feed in their home. I have tried to find the ship's records and passenger list for Ole Nyhus, Hans and Marte Nyhus and the family. The information I have is that Ole Nyhus came to the U.S. in 1881. Hans Peter Nyhus came on the Angelo on April 20, 1883. Marte and the children came in 1884. I did try to find more on the information on this site for the ship Angelo. I wasn't able to find the passenger list though. I don't know what the path of travel for them would be. I found out the Wilson line was a very popular line of ship, but where they left from and left to England and then to New York? I don't know any of the ports they left or landed at. I appreciate everyone's help. Sue
Jo Anne SadlerThe Angelo was a short transit "feeder ship" that took emigrants from Norway to Hull, England. There are no passenger lists for these feeder ships. The Wilson Line operated the feeder ships, not the transatlantic voyage. Without reading through all these postings, you have to find their "Moving Out" record, either on Digitalarkivet or from the church records. The police protocols on Digitalarkivet some times list the agent, shipping line. If you know the shipping line and exact date(s) of emigration, you can research which routes and ship possibilities. The dates given on U.S. census are just approximates, the census taker would ask how many years they were in U.S., etc. and quickly figure back.
