Info about the family of Birkemoe
dburkemoI'm looking for info on the Birkemoes. My husband's grandparents came to USA in 1886. They were Ludvig and Dorothea Birkemoe. The came with atleast three sons, Thomas the oldest,( being my husbands grandther), Berrtrand, and Peter the youngest. They came from Stavanger. LUdvig was a baker.Ludvig was born in 1844, in Heskestad, Dorothea was born in 1844, in Borhesogen. Ludvig's father was Torkild Birkemoe, born 1810, Heskestad, mother was Torbaar (Gitles), born 1812,in Heskestad. I would like to know Torkild Birkemoe's family names. I would like to know if Ludvig had any brothers or sisters. Did any other family members come to the USA with Ludvig and Dorothea? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

dburkemoThanks for the infomation, let me, make sure I understand.Torkild Pedersen is the same person as Torkild Birkemoe? I know that the farm name had something to do with the last name. I will go over the LDS site. Thanks again. Is there any info on Dorothea Birkemo, I know that she was born in Borhesogen, and Her father's name I think, was Andrias Lars, I think, jhe was born in 1806, at Klostero. Thank you for all your help. Donna Burkemo
Jo Anne SadlerThe Heskestad church records have been microfilmed and are available to rental at a local Family History Center: click here
jwiborgHello Donna, yes, Torkild Birkemoe = Torkild Pedersen After 1850, it became more and common to take the farmname as a last name, especially for those who emigrated. Birkemoe is a farm name in Heskestad, Lunde parish, Rogaland. Actually, 1865-census shows 9 farms in Heskestad by that name, and they were probably situated close to each oher. I'm having a hard time figuring out where Dorothea's birthplace is... Borhesogn is not a place in Norway. It could be Borre sogn, which means Borre parish in Vestfold county. There is one Dorthea born 1844 there, her parents are Ditlev Olsen & Kirstine Marie Opsal, link I'ts not close to Heskestad tough..., so how did they meet...? [:I] How did you find info about her father being one "Andrias Larsen, born 1806 at Klostero"? I think you need to locate the birth/christening records of one of their sons; Thomas, Bertrand or Peter. They are probably born in Stavanger, and thus christened in Stavanger Domkirke (Cathedral) or Sankt Petri Kirke (Church). These records could mention Dorothea's last name. Or, you could try to locate Ludvig and Dorothea's marriage records... [:)] Jan Peter
dburkemoThanks again, I rec'd the info, on Andrias Lars from, my husband's second cousin, I think, I said he copied it from a 1865 Telling. Thanks again, for your help, and I will go to the LDS site. . .

dburkemothnaks again Jan, for all the info. I do know that Peter Ludvig moved to stavanger, I don't know if him and Dorothea were married, in Heskestad, or Stavanger. I will do some research on the LDS site. I do have one more name. My husband's grandmother, was Tillie Tarlson, born in Norway. I think, she was born in Stavanger, either 1872 or 1874.She atleast 2 brothers, that I know of. Sven born 1877, and Ole born 1876, in Norway. Their mother was Anna Tarlson. They came to the US in 1886. Don't know anything about her father, would like to know his name. And any info on Anna, and family. thanks, Donna
jwiborgHi, I think I've been blind! [:)] I see now that widower Andrias Larsen (59) is listed below the Birkemoe's in census-1865. But I'm not convinced he's Dorthea's father. I didn't notice Dorthea's patronym either, but her lastname is Larsdatter, so her father's firstname should be Lars, not Andrias... Ludvig & Dorthea are quite young, so I believe they got married in 1864 or 1865, and in either Heskestad or Stavanger. (She is 21, married and living in Stavanger at the time of the census, which was January 1st, 1966.) Locate your nearest Family History Center and browse through the wedding records for those two years, you'll probably find them within few hours...! [:)] Ludvig Torkelsen (=Ludvig Birkemoe) is not among the people registered in the database Confirmations in Heskestad, Lund 1854-1886. This indicates that the Birkemoe family left Heskestad and moved to Stavanger before 1858. (Confirmations in Norway are normally held at age 14, and Ludvig was 14 yo in 1858.) Ludvig should then be registered in the confirmation database from Stavanger around 1858. Jan Peter
dburkemoJan, Once again I want to Thank you for all your help. I am looking into finding the LDS centers. Happy Valentine Day!!! Donna
