spelling?
9245	My great-grandparents arrived in NY in 1885 I think. Their name was Andriasen and the few family items I have show the spelling that way. The US info I've found also show the same. However in Norway records I can find no matches. Was the proper spelling"Andreasen"? Is it common to find these changes and how do you get around them ? Thanks[8D]
hasto	Spelling of Norwegian names varied a lot before 1900. There was no standard. A pastor or a clerk might spell a man's name in his own private style, he did not ask the owner of the name. Andriasen is a spelling according to a common pronunsiation of the name. The name means "son of Andrias". In the Norwegian Bible the name is spelled Andreas, and that is the most common spelling also. A common variation is Anders. Before 1800 you might see changing between Andreas and Anders. But about 1900 they were regarded as two different names. Possible vatiations of Andriasen: Andriassen, Andreasen, Andreassen, Andersen, Andresen, Andreas. , Andreass. , Andreassøn
jwiborg	Hi, I think you need to locate your people in some census'es, emigrant records or churchbooks, to solve this. Andriasen means "son of Andrias", while Andreasen means "son of Andreas". So you'll have to find his father's name. He must be named Andrias or Andreas. In census-1865 for Norway, 1477 men was named Andrias, while 24050 was named Andreas. So Andreas was a much more common firstname, but there is a possibility for Andrias as well... [:)] Jan Peter
