Carl Anderson Early 1900's to Australia
MeAnder	Hello, My namesake, Carl Anderson, was in the Norweigan Merchant Navy before he was discharged/resigned and lived in Australia. I believe he died in Sydney during the late 1940's and was probably born between 1890 and 1900, as he died in his mid to late 50's. I am guessing he was in the NMN during WW1 or the end of WW1. We know he was from Norway and was illiterate. But everything else is unknown. We are fairly certain that the spelling of his name is correct. I am curious to know more, please feel free to reply.
Jo Anne Sadler	This site could probably help you: http://www.warsailors.com/ I doubt if he was truly illiterate, there is a difference between know how to read; knowing how to write and knowing how to speak a language. We lump them all together but they are separate things. I can read a little Norwegian but I cannot speak it or write it. In order to be confirmed he would have had to know how to read the gospel and probably before the congregation. I doubt if he would have been accepted into the Merchant Marines if he was illiterate. Carl Anderson is a common name, getting his death certificate would be a start, also, marriage records often yield good information.
MeAnder	Hi, Umm, he was illiterate- as in couldn't read and write. He had no problems with "English" as far as I am aware when he got here- His mother signed his release forms from the merchant navy, which I don't have access to, and we don't know her name, only that she was his mother. Also, I doubt he was a war sailor, like regular navy, I am of the inkling he was in the merchant / trading navy. I am hazarding a guess at when though. When he died exactly, where he died and when he came to Australia is a mystery, as is his relationship to me. These are all estimates. But we know for sure the spelling was correct, and it was the Norweigan Merchant Navy that he was in before he got here. I will look at the site anyways, thanks MeAnder
MeAnder	Hi Umm, also I would doubt he was merchant navy during ww2 because he was already in Australia during the war and died somewhere at the end of the war (exact year etc not known) I would say he probably was living here by 1937. If he was a war sailor, it be WW1. Meander
