info on GG Grandfather Gunder Erickson
ksuhistoryhi, I'm looking for any info on my GG Grandfather Gunder Erickson b. abt 1813, wife Isabel and son Erick b 1848. Their next son Ole born in 1850 in Whitewater Wisconsin. I do not find them in the 1850 census, but find them in the 1860 census. According to his death cert, his fathers name was Erick and his mothers name was Carrie. According to family lore, he came from Oslo, but I have no proof- then again, family lore said his name was Oscar- so who knows[:D] Any help would be appriciated- Thanks Shelly
hastoI have found some names on Familysearch that may be right. They have to be checked up. The family is from Telemark. Isabel was not a common Norwegian name, so that is probably a change from a more typical Noregian name, I guess she was Ingeborg Olsdatter, listed as Mary Their son Erik, born 1848 in Norway in Solum parish Their marriage in 1845 in Holla (Holden) parish Gunder Eriksen, born 1813 Ingeborg Olsdatter, born 1822
ksuhistoryHarald, I think you've found them- what a blessing. Now the task is to find out more about the family in Norway- who were they, family members?, what did they do? did anyone else come over to USA?- Where should I look for more info to help me? thanks so much Shelly
Jo Anne SadlerFrom the links Harald gave you are references to the microfilmed church records available for rental at a local Family History Center. There are lookup volunteers for Solum and Sauherad: http://www.rootsweb.com/~norway/lookups.html#Telemark You should consider joining the Telelaget of Norway for Telemark descendants: http://www.telelaget.com/
HopkinsYou'll want to concentrate your research in Solum area of Telemark, Norway. LDS Family History Library catalog indicates that they have the parish church records for Solum as early as 1701 copied to microfilm which you'll be able to order and use at one of their Family History Centers. There also appears to be a published history/genealogy work about Solum - "Solum Bygds Historie", 2 volumes by Toralf Gjone. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/articles.html http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/sab/howto.html An LDS microfiche set of emigrants from Telemark records that Gunder Eriksen (b. 1813 17/7), Ingeborg Olsdtr. (b. 1827 29/4) and son Erik (1848 31/3) left Norway in 1849.
Jo Anne SadlerDoes it say the month or day they left in 1849?
hastoThe Norwegian/American 1850 census has his Norwegian name as Gunder Eriksen Hanes. That means that he lived on Hanes farm in Solum when he emigrated in 1849. Hanes farm is 5 km west of Skien town Map Gunder Eriksen had a brother Tor, born 1811. This church book ends 1814, and I don't think Familysearch has the next church book online. So I have no idea if there were more siblings. Their parents married 1810 I wondered why they named the eldest son Tor, and found he was named to honour Ingeborg Karine's first husbond Tor Abrahamsen . Gunder and Tor probably had a half-sister born 1806. The mother's name is wrong, - perhaps mixed with the daughter's name? There is a genealogy site with the names of lots of ancestors for you: Solumslekt Here you find information about Ingeborg Karine Larsdatter It shows that she married to the widower Tor Abrahamsen on Hanes farm. He probebly died shortly after. So in 1810 Erik Gundersen married the widow and settled on Hanes farm.
ksuhistoryYou all are a wealth of info with links to help me. I just wish my mother who was Barbara Erickson was still alive to enjoy all of this- she loved her Norwegian roots- every year my brother and I put a Norwegian flag on her grave. [:)] She was the last of her siblings, her only brother Harold "Pete" Erickson had 4 sons 2 of them have male children so the name Erickson from that family still lives on- I'll work on them to continue the line [:D] LOL once again thanks for everything and if I can be of anying help in the Northern Illinois/Souther Wisconsin area just let me know and I'll see what I can do Shelly
hastoThe father of Ingeborg Olsdatter, born 1822, was Ole Tovsen from Sauherad parish His parents in 1801 census on Holten farm in Sauherad, Tov Olsen (40) and Ingeborg Paulsdatter (40)

It does not list port or any more specific date. It does list the 3 member family as being from Solum.
