The Island of Hitra
PHXviking	Recently, my family celebrated the centenial of our immingrant great granfather who came to the US and settled. I'm not certain of his real name, but my families last name is Ulvog. Hatland and Hanson are also names of relations. As well, I know my family originated from the island of Hitra (I hope I spelled it right). I have also found a settlement listed as "Ulvog" on the island. I am fifth generation Norse/American. I am curious about my heritage. My grandparents have only been able to give me limited information of our families trades. However, they have told me that through the centuries my family were blacksmiths. I would be deeply appreciative of any information leading to finding my roots. Thanx. Rob U
askeroi	How do you ecpect anybody to be able to help you when you give as little information as this? If you don't know his "real" name give us a hint of his "american" name. A age hint or birth year would also help. (I quick look in the census' for 1875 and 1900 reveals some 48 farms called Ulvaag in the area. And no smiths. But on a farm they probably all also were smiths). So help yourself by give us some more information... Even a "John Smith" is better than this... askeroi

PHXviking	I do apollogize for the lacking information. However, after several correspondences with my family, I have come up with the a few names. My great great grandfather's name is Alfred Ulvog. His last name was Olson until he arrived here, where he changed it to Ulvog, after the settlement he came from on Hitra. He also has a brother named Knut Olson. Whether or not my uncle changed his name when he arrived, I don't know. I also came up with Alfred's wife's maiden name as being Hatland. Christina, Clara, and Tillie were the Hatland sisters. askeroi	In the 1900 cencus the Ulvaag farms at Hitra are listed under Fillan (not Hitra). On fram no 39/4 I find: Gabriel Olsen, housefather, born abt 1849, widower and his sons Daniel (born abt 1884), Knut (born abt 1887) and Alfred (born abt 1893) all listed as Gabrielsen (="son of Gabriel") but they obviously took their father's patronymicon as surname) and their sister Anna Gabrielsdatter (="daughter of Gabriel")(born abt 1889). This must be your family! There is no Hatland farm or people on the island of Hitra in the 1875/1900 cencus, though... askeroi
