finding passenger lists
Bev Porter MoltzauOluf H. Pederson was born 18 June 1864 in Huckelhustuen, Birid, Oppland, Norway. I have a date of 1878 for his emigration. I am not certain how to proceed on finding the ship and manifest for this ancestor.
Jo Anne SadlerRecommend you read the article on this site - Hunting Passenger Lists. Look at the Index of Departures and the Arrivals on this site, you will see that they might have arrived in New York, Philadelphia or in Canada. You need to find him in the police protocols on Digitalarkivet, it give the exact date of departure and most likely would give the shipping line, final destination. After you have this information you can research the routes and ports they took on this site also. Since he came from Oppland, Bergen would be a good place to start: click here
jwiborgHi, where do you have his initial "H" from? Could it be "K"? The reason I ask, it that there is a record of one Ole Kristian Pedersen (18) from Birid, emigrating to Quebec on Oct. 20th, 1882: Link. He looks to be going together with brother Peder (11). Lastname, age and location fits, but then again; "Ole Pedersen" was quite a common name... it's almost like looking for Mr. John Doe in New York.. [;)] Here is Oluf on the farm Huskelhustuen in census 1865. Travelling to Bergen from that area was quite a challenge, crossing the highest mountains in Norway, while down to Oslo it was "just" to follow the valley... Bev Porter MoltzauThanks so much for this information....the census confirms my Pederson family in Birit...and it appears the emigration data is my Ole and his brother Peder, Pederson....it has opened a window for me to do further research. Best regards, Bev Porter Moltzau Oregon
