Tosten and Tora Olson and Ole H Thompson
SaintOlafI am a descendent of Ole H. Thompson born September 8, 1876 in Telemarken, Norway. Ole H. Thompson married Johanna Aarseth born December 3. 1888. They settled in Big Bend Township, Chipprewa County, Minnesota. Ole passed away April 11, 1959. Johanna passed away August 9, 1940. Ole H. Thompson was one and a half years old when the family came on their own boat to America. Parents are said to be Tosten and Thora Olson. If Ole was born in Telemark then I assume his parents are from the area. Ole had a brother named Kettel that died at sea. Ole has two sisters Margit Thompson and Ragnhild Thompson Ole has two brothers Johannes Thompson and Even Thompson. I know Ole's descendents and some on the other siblings. I am trying to find more about Thosten/Tosten and Thora/Tora Olson. I have info that Thosten Olson was born Sep 22, 1827 in Silver, Norway and died Aug 22, 1888. Thora Olson born Sep 29, 1838 and died Oct 29, 1919. I believe they both passed away near Montevideo, Chippewa County, Minnesota. Mike Andrews, hometown: Milan, Minnesota Hopkins, Minnesota

HopkinsThe emigrants from Telemark microfiche set (LDS) includes the family, but does not list what part of Telemark they were from. The farm name identifier is hard to read but appears more like 'Reier' on that record. (But my eyes are not that good - I could be mistaken.) Torsten/Thorsten Olsen was born in Seljord district of Telemark, his wife Thora/Thore Johannesdtr was born in Rauland district of Telemark. At the time of the 1865 census they and their two oldest children were living in Vinje, Telemark. http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1865&knr=0834&kenr=003&bnr=0047&lnr=00

Jo Anne SadlerThey would not have come on their own boat, sometimes family stories get embellished in the retelling.[:p] In the Oslo emigrant list unfortuately does not give the line they contracted with but it does indicate they took the feeder ship - Hero - to Hull, England. There is information and a picture of the Hero on this site as well as much information on the trip to Hull and final destination in North America. If you look at the Index of Departures and July 1878 Index of Arrivals here, they could have arrived at the Port of New York or Quebec. I could not find them in the online New York or Philadelphia arrival databases so they probably went through Quebec. These microfilm passenger lists can be rented at a local Family History Center, since you have the exact date of departure finding the correct list should be fairly easy.
