Help finding Halgren Brotten
cripkenI'm looking for help finding Halgren Brotten and have been stumped despite the abundant resources online. The only family resoures I have say that he and his wife, Margaret, maiden name Ellefson had a farm near Christiania. Also, they may have been married around 1881. I believe Margaret's birthday is 3/12/1863. Thank you.
HopkinsDid the couple emigrate to the US? Have you found more information about them in US and/or state censuses? other records such as death records, obituaries, local histories, church records, etc? You want to look for more information such as WHEN did they emigrate from Norway? Did they have children born in Norway? What were the names of their children? Where in the US did they live? When was Halgren Brotten born? Do US records show Halgren listed under other names and spellings? Do any records list any clue as to WHERE in Norway each of them came from?
cripkenI cannot find any records for Halgren and Margaret in the U.S. other than a photo of my grandma with Halgren (no date on the photo). My only other source of information is an autobiography my grandma wrote in 1927 while in high school that lists their names and that they were farmers near Christiana. They were married in Norway and emmigrated to Abercrombie, ND but I have no dates.
jwiborgHi, have you located them in census-1900 for Abercrombie, ND? If you find them there, you should be able to find more information about the couple.
  • How old are they?
  • How long have they been in the US?
  • Any children (possibly named after their grandparents)?
  • Are the names spelled the same?
Halgren Brotten is for sure not the spelling in Norway. First of all, noone is called Halgren in census-1865 for Norway, but his name could be Halgrim or Halsten. Brotten could be Braaten. So it could be that your're looking for someone named Halgrim, living on a farm named Braaten in Norway... Two wild shots from census-1865: Halgrim Evens. (15), Nordrehov, Buskerud Halgrim Ols. (17), Sigdal, Buskerud Jan Peter
Jo Anne SadlerAs wonderful as the Internet is, everything is not online and everthing is not free.[:p] There is more than one town called Abercrombie in North Dakota, which county are you talking about? Contacting the local county historical society could be very helpful. You must know when/where their children were born, at least your parent.
jwiborgIn US-census 1880, Norwegians can be found in Fort Abercrombi, Richland county, Dakota Territory. Today; Richland, North Dakota. Jan Peter
cripkenWell I had some luck today with the 1900 Federal Census records. Halgrim Braaten lived in Ibsen, ND and had moved to Abercrombie, ND by the 1910 census. According to the census Halgrim emmigrated to the U.S. in 1872 an Margrette in 1873. Also according to the census Halgrim was born in Nov. of 1850 and Margrette in March of 1858. I still can't seem to locate any immigration records or information from where in Norway. Any ideas?
Jo Anne SadlerIn the 1900 census he is enumerated as "Halsten Braaten and in the 1910 census he is Halgrim Braaten. Also, in the 1910 census it shows an Andrew Braaten, 46, brother, immigrated 1886. In the 1920 census he is H.E. Britten in Abercombie living with son Melvin and his family, married. Two doors away is Margaret living with a grandaughter. Have you searched the North Dakota death index to secure their death certificates? https://secure.apps.state.nd.us/doh/certificates/deathCertSearch.htm Their are passengers lists for 1873 on this site, also check www.castlegarden.org. Recommend you research the different name spellings and also try to find brother Andrew who most likely was Andris in Norway.
BriningNorth Dakota has naturalization records and the 1885 census on line. He is in the naturalization records 1st filing January 04, 1882 in Cass county and 2nd filing November 03, 1890 in Richland county. You can order the records on line but I don't know if the early records will give you much information.
